Common as this experience is, it may be difficult to bring up to a primary care doctor or even know who you should see for help. While people with ovaries are encouraged to see an ob-gyn annually, there&#8217;s no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/why-dont-men-have-their-own-specialists\/\">equivalent recommendation<\/a> for people with penises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, there are lots of effective treatments for erectile dysfunction, ranging from non-invasive to surgical. We break down where you should seek treatment and what that might be, so you can resume your sex life without stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What causes erectile dysfunction?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erections occur when a penis fills up with blood and becomes hard and rigid, typically in response to sexual arousal. Erectile function relies on the functioning of many different body parts, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as your muscles, nerves, hormones and blood vessels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople with erectile dysfunction are unable to have an erection that\u2019s satisfactory for sexual intercourse,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.mountsinai.org\/robert-j-valenzuela\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Valenzuela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist with Mount Sinai in New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common causes of erectile dysfunction include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety\/Trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain Medications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCertain blood pressure medications, along with medications for depression and anxiety, can interfere with erectile function,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.umich.edu\/dept\/urology\/yooni-blair-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yooni Blair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of urology at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. Opioids and recreational drug use can also cause ED.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with a penis can develop ED, but Blair says medical risk factors for ED generally increase with age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What should you do if you have ED?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf it\u2019s a one and done scenario, there\u2019s probably not too much to worry about,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/michael-eisenberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Eisenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of urology at Stanford Medical School. \u201cBut if it\u2019s a consistent issue, talk to your doctor, because there\u2019s a lot that can be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>People with penises may fail to get an erection up to 20 percent of the time. But if failure occurs around 50 percent of the time, it&#8217;s probably a sign you need help.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, you should start by booking an appointment with someone you feel comfortable with, like your primary care provider. They can refer you to a specialist, like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/why-dont-men-have-their-own-specialists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor that specializes in the urinary tract and issues with male genitalia. Depending on your insurance coverage, you also might be able to bypass your PCP and go straight to a urologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no one test for ED; instead, your provider will ask you about your symptoms and try to identify the underlying cause, whether through a physical exam, blood tests, or an ultrasound to better understand what\u2019s going on with your penis and the surrounding area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How is ED treated?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How ED is treated depends on what\u2019s causing it. Lifestyle modifications, such as eating a more nutritious diet, exercising more and\/or quitting smoking, can all help improve conditions that contribute to ED.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the cause is psychological, then Valenzuela says your provider might recommend psychotherapy to help improve your thoughts and emotions around sex. Your doctor may also tweak your medication regimen if they think your ED stems from a drug you\u2019re taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some treatments for erectile dysfunction include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter vacuum erection devices that constrict the penis with a band and temporarily increase blood flow to the area\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that open up blood vessels in the penis, such as Viagra and Cialis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppositories you insert in the urethra before sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penile injections you insert before sex\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgical insertion of a device that keeps the penis rigid enough for sex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most doctors start with the least invasive option and move forward with other options only if a patient doesn\u2019t improve. Some patients, Eisenberg says, need treatment indefinitely, while others only need temporary treatment while they improve a medical condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be tough to speak up about your erection problems, but it\u2019s important to seek treatment as soon as you notice ED symptoms affecting your sex life and mental well-being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, the sooner you see a medical provider, the better outcome you\u2019ll have. \u201cSeeing a provider earlier on may help in making sure it doesn\u2019t progress further,\u201d says Blair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor\u2019s appointment?
