People who have diabetes are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/visionhealth\/resources\/features\/glaucoma-awareness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely to develop glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Preventing diabetes is one way you can protect your eyesight as you age, but you can also protect your vision using these tips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Maintain a healthy weight<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity increases your risk for diabetes. Left unmanaged, diabetes can contribute to diseases like diabetic retinopathy, macular edema and glaucoma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/diabetic-retinopathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20 to 74. This disease happens when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in your retinas. Your diet also influences your health. Eating a well-balanced diet loaded with vitamins and minerals can help you manage your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Follow a fitness routine<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying active is a great way to maintain your health, including your vision. Working out improves your blood pressure after just one session. Going to sleep at the same time every night will help you regulate your sleep schedule. Exercising during the day might help you fall asleep more easily. Also make sure your room feels comfortable and relaxing at bedtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Schedule regular eye care appointments<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early detection and treatment of eye conditions is key to preserving your vision. If you have diabetes or wear glasses, you should go to the eye doctor at least once a year.
