You\u2019re not alone. Many people report feeling more tired and sluggish during the shorter days of winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While for some it\u2019s simply a part of the body\u2019s natural response to seasonal change, for others the shift in seasons coincides with a type of depression called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/seasonal-affective-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal affective disorder. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Most patients experience SAD in winter (\u201cwinter-pattern SAD\u201d), while a smaller group experiences the condition in the hot summer months (\u201csummer-pattern SAD\u201d). There are also people that experience what is known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8831642\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subsyndromal SAD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the \u201cwinter blues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a whole continuum between people who tend to be more vulnerable in the winter,\u201d says Dr. Paul Desan, director of the Winter Depression Research Clinic at the Yale School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our 24-hour internal clock, also called our circadian rhythm, regulates many important physiological processes (like the release of different hormones that help you sleep at night). When the seasons change, our clocks shift to adjust to shorter days and longer nights. Some have internal clocks that aren\u2019t as great at adjusting to these shifts \u2014 which contributes to SAD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/seasonal-affective-disorder\/in-depth\/seasonal-affective-disorder-treatment\/art-20048298\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which patients sit in front of a SAD lamp that emits artificial sunlight to jumpstart their circadian rhythm, is one of the top treatments for SAD. Many researchers believe light therapy is uniquely suited for treatment of the disorder, because it addresses the underlying mechanisms, saysDr. Alfred Lewy, professor emeritus of psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c(It\u2019s) getting at the root cause of the trigger for getting depressed in the winter, not just treating the symptoms,\u201d Lewy says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Abstract\/502891\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> light therapy can help, there can be negative side effects including nausea, headaches and jitteriness. Others find light therapy can cause them to have trouble <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16041296\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Plus, light therapy is only effective if used daily for 30 minutes to an hour, which may be inconvenient for people with busy morning schedules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If light therapy isn\u2019t working for you, or you want to try another treatment, here are some methods that can help to reduce symptoms of SAD.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Walk or exercise outside during daylight hours<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximizing your exposure to outdoor light can help readjust your circadian rhythm and therefore reduce some of the symptoms of SAD, says Desan. Bright outdoor light has the same effect as the light emitted by a SAD lamp, so getting outside at the right moment can have similar benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether natural or artificial, the bright light helps to regulate the circadian process disrupted by SAD: it reduces the production of the hormone melatonin, which makes you sleepy, and increases the mood-boosting hormone serotonin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting some light exercise while you\u2019re soaking up the outdoor light can help boost your mood, too, says Desan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThere are some people who can just get out first thing in the morning, and work in the garden or jog when the sun comes up <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re using every bit of natural light,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Try therapy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279297\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive behavioral therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 is commonly used to help treat patients struggling with depression, anxiety and addiction. It blends behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy to help patients <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/book\/40360?sid=oup:oxfordacademic&amp;genre=book&amp;aulast=Rohan&amp;aufirst=Kelly+J.&amp;title=Coping+with+the+Seasons%3A+Therapist+Guide%3A+A+Cognitive-Behavioral+Approach+to+Seasonal+Affective+Disorder&amp;date=2008-09-01\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find practicable ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address the everyday problems\u00a0 their diagnosis causes. For SAD patients, this can mean reframing negative thoughts about the cold season, developing coping mechanisms and designing a personal relapse-prevention form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that CBT can help treat the symptoms of SAD: a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25859764\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 clinical study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found\u00a0 CBT\u00a0 was comparable to the benefits of light therapy, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26539881\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that it led to better long-term outcomes for some patients. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/sick-of-winter-think-like-a-norwegian\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Scandinavia shows that changing your mindset toward winter can lead to better outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone\u00a0 struggling with SAD should see a mental health medical provider to determine the cause of their symptoms, Desan says. SAD is clinically distinct\u00a0 from major depression, which a psychiatrist can accurately differentiate and diagnose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Consider medication<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The depression brought on by SAD can be treated with antidepressant medication like other kinds of major depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor some people, the light therapy doesn\u2019t work, or they don\u2019t find it very convenient,\u201d Desan says. \u201cSo some people do try pharmacological antidepressants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2017\/0101\/p10.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Wellbutrin (known generically as bupropion) can be effective in treating the effects of seasonal affective disorder. For now, it is the only FDA-approved antidepressant for SAD. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.31887\/DCNS.2003.5.4\/npraschakrieder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found promising results from the medications Zoloft (known generically as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sertraline) and Prozac (known generically as fluoxetine).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unlike taking antidepressants for major depression, patients with SAD generally take the medication only part of the year, timed to the onset of symptoms, and then are weaned off when the symptoms abate as the season changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor\u2019s appointment?
