A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9639-headaches\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pain in your head, face or neck which can include pressure that\u2019s throbbing, constant, sharp or dull. It can vary significantly in pain type, severity, location and frequency. Chronic headaches may greatly hinder quality of life if someone is constantly in pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step toward reducing the frequency and severity of headaches is to pinpoint what type of headache you are experiencing, which will help determine the underlying cause. Use our guide to differentiate between the most common types of headaches and to learn how they can be effectively treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cluster Headaches<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most painful types is the cluster headache, which occurs in cyclical patterns or cluster periods. These may wake you in the night with intense pain in or around one eye, on one side of the head. Bouts of frequent attacks could last weeks or even months. Those<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5003-cluster-headaches\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most affected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often ages 20 to 40. The cause is unknown, but cluster headache patterns suggest that abnormalities in the hypothalamus, which helps regulate the autonomic nervous system in the brain, play a role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cluster headaches strike quickly, usually without warning, and tend to have recognizable<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/cluster-headache\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352080\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excruciating pain generally situated in, behind or around one eye, but which may radiate to other areas of your face, head and neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One-sided pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive tears or tearing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness of your eye on the affected side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffy or runny nose on the affected side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forehead or facial sweating on the affected side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pale skin or flushing on your face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling around your eye on the affected side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooping eyelid on the affected side<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/cluster-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a cluster headache involves stopping a current attack and preventing future attacks. To end or moderate an attack in progress, your healthcare provider may give you a high-dose oxygen therapy through a face mask for 15 to 20 minutes or prescribe a nasal spray to help with pain relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent future cluster headaches, it&#8217;s critical to pinpoint what triggers your headaches. Avoiding smoking and alcohol is especially encouraged. Talk to your doctor, who may prescribe a medication regimen to help prevent cluster headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hypnic Headaches<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it exclusively occurs during sleep and wakes the person experiencing it, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/hypnic-headache\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypnic headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is nicknamed an \u201calarm clock\u201d headache. The pain may last between 15 minutes to four hours after waking. Often, this rare sleep disorder begins after age 50, but it may occur in younger people as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK557598\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain can range<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from mild to severe, is most commonly reported as \u201cdull\u201d and typically occurs on both sides of the head. Some report a throbbing or pulsating headache. Hypnic headaches also tend to occur more than once per night. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium carbonate, caffeine, melatonin, flunarizine, indomethacin and topiramate can be used to treat hypnic headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Migraine Headaches<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/headaches-vs-migraines-whats-the-difference\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5005-migraine-headaches\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common neurological disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that often presents as a pulsating headache on one side of the head. It often grows\u00a0 worse with physical activity or exposure to certain lights, sounds or smells and can last at least four hours or multiple days. Migraines are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently one-sided, but they may occur anywhere on the head, neck and face or all over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraines can be classified into<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560787\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subtypes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine without aura<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine with aura<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic migraine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probable migraine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/migraine-headaches#symptoms\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any migraine include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A throbbing or pounding feeling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to light, noise and\/or smells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sinus-like&#8221; symptoms such as watering eyes, nasal congestion and a sense of facial pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is not a cure for migraine headaches, but you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-conditions\/migraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat your symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right away for pain relief. Over-the-counter pain medicines can be helpful when a migraine is mild, while other medications can address nausea and\/or vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent future symptoms, try to avoid your known triggers. If you have frequent migraines, talk to your healthcare provider about prescribing medicine to lessen the number of attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tension Headaches<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/tension-headache\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353977\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tension headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most common type of headache. It\u2019s usually a mild to moderate pain, often described as feeling like a tight band around the head. These typically cause a steady ache, as opposed to a throbbing one, and tend to affect both sides of the head. Tension-type headaches are divided into two main categories: episodic and chronic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/tension-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dull, aching head pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensations of tightness or pressure across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenderness in the scalp, neck and shoulder muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow onset<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC medication can usually help with pain relief. Lifestyle changes such as regular sleep, exercise, hydration and meal schedules can reduce or prevent these headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Secondary Headaches<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-conditions\/brain-and-nerves\/headache\/types.html#:~:text=A%20secondary%20headache%20is%20caused,Aneurysm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secondary headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is caused by another condition that triggers pain-sensitive areas in the neck and head. They are rare, but they can also be much more serious than primary headaches, where the headache itself is the problem. Secondary headaches may be a warning sign of a more serious underlying condition, including<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain tumors, aneurysm, meningitis or a neck or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-to-know-about-concussions-even-if-youre-not-an-athlete\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/secondary-headaches\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distinguish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> secondary headaches from primary headaches by the features of the headache, other co-occuring symptoms and a physical examination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will check for warning signs, which might include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First or worst\u201d headache of your life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrupt onset, without any warning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fundamental changes in a pattern of recurring headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches beginning at unusual ages, namely under 5 or over 50<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of cancer, HIV or pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal physical exam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Getting a headache after a seizure, passing out, exertion, sex or certain types of internal squeezing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>When to Seek Care<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should seek <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/symptoms\/headache\/basics\/when-to-see-doctor\/sym-20050800#:~:text=See%20a%20doctor%20if%20you,of%20over%2Dthe%2Dcounter%20drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immediate medical attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;re experiencing the worst headache of your life. Many patients describe such as event as a sudden, severe headache or a headache accompanied by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion or trouble understanding speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High fever, greater than about 102 degrees Fahrenheit<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numbness, weakness or paralysis on one side of your body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiff neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble seeing, speaking or walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms could indicate a serious condition like a stroke, meningitis or encephalitis.
