Most of these cases of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/when-you-should-really-see-an-eye-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">vision loss\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are caused by conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, ocular complications of diabetes mellitus and age-related cataracts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Below, we get into the common vision conditions that come with old age, and how you can prevent and\/or manage them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Understanding the terms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opticalimages.com\/2021\/12\/23\/whats-the-difference-between-low-vision-and-being-legally-blind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Low vision<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: A portion of your vision is impaired.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/how-are-terms-low-vision-visually-impaired-and-blind-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Near-sighted\/myopic:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A type of low vision where you cannot see distant objects clearly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/how-are-terms-low-vision-visually-impaired-and-blind-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Far-sighted\/hyperopic:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u00a0A type of low vision where you cannot see close objects clearly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/ophthalmology.pitt.edu\/vision-impairment\/what-vision-impairment#:~:text=Vision%20impairment%20means%20that%20a,objects%20as%20clearly%20as%20usual.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Visually impaired:\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This means a person&#8217;s eyesight cannot be repaired to reach an average level.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/how-are-terms-low-vision-visually-impaired-and-blind-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Partially sighted:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A type of impairment that requires special education services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003040.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Blindness:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A lack of vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/how-are-terms-low-vision-visually-impaired-and-blind-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Legally blind:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Refers to people with less than\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/what-does-it-mean-to-have-20-20-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">20\/200 vision<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in the better eye or with a limited field of vision that is 20 degrees or less at its widest point.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/how-are-terms-low-vision-visually-impaired-and-blind-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Totally blind:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Describes people with\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opticalimages.com\/2021\/12\/23\/whats-the-difference-between-low-vision-and-being-legally-blind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a complete lack\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of form and light reception. They need braille, raised-line drawings, audio recordings and other non-visual media to access content in visually presented materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Common eye problems and diseases<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While some eye conditions aren&#8217;t as severe on their own, they might indicate something more dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-is-presbyopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Presbyopia:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0When your eyes slowly lose the capacity to see things up close.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-are-floaters-flashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Floaters and flashes:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Floaters look like tiny dots in your field of vision. Flashes look like flashing lights or lightning strikes in your field of vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-is-dry-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dry eyes:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Dry eyes occur when your eyes don&#8217;t produce enough tears.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/symptoms\/tearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tearing\/watery eyes:<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0This describes the excessive production of tears.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Common Eye Diseases<\/h2>\n<h3>Glaucoma<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-is-glaucoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a disease that damages<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/glaucoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0your eye&#8217;s optic nerve<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The condition is the leading cause of blindness for people over 60.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the early stages, there are typically no warning signs. While there is no cure, treatments and early detection through a comprehensive eye exam can help stop the damage and protect your vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are many different types of glaucoma.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/glaucoma\/types-glaucoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open-angle glaucoma<\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is the most common form, accounting for 9 in 10 cases in the United States. Most people don&#8217;t realize they have open-angle glaucoma until they lose their eyesight. While\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/video-visits-with-eye-doctors-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doctors<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0aren&#8217;t entirely sure what causes open-angle glaucoma, they think it is related to pressure buildup in the eye. People with high blood pressure and diabetes are at higher risk for this type of glaucoma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Angle-closure glaucoma<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a medical emergency. The symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma include intense eye pain, blurry vision, red eye, and nausea. In angle-closure glaucoma, your eye cannot drain out fluid, and if not treated immediately, it can cause blindness in just a few days. Your\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/outlining-your-most-basic-access-rights-at-the-doctors-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doctor<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will use laser treatment and prescribe medicine to drain the fluid to release some pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/glaucoma\/types-glaucoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Normal tension glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a type of open-angle glaucoma, but it happens in people who have normal eye pressure. Doctors don&#8217;t know what causes this. You&#8217;re at increased risk if you have heart problems such as an irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cataracts<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/cataracts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cataracts<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are common as you age and cause a cloudy area in the lens of your eye. Cataracts can go unnoticed for some time and eventually cause vision to be blurry, hazy, and less colorful, eventually leading to vision loss. Other symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seeing a halo around lights<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seeing double<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Frequently updating your glasses or contact lens prescription.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Luckily, there is surgery to get rid of cataracts. While cataracts typically result from age, occasionally, they can occur following surgery for a different eye issue or due to an unrelated eye injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You&#8217;re most at risk for cataracts if you have health problems like diabetes, smoke, drink excessively, have a family history of cataracts, spend a lot of time in the sun or take steroids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Use sunglasses outside to prevent cataracts and protect your eyes from the sun. Wear protective eye equipment when playing sports or working with power tools. Quitting smoking and eating a healthy, balanced diet can also help prevent cataracts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Conjunctivitis<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/pink-eye\/causes-pink-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conjunctivitis,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0commonly referred to as pink eye, is a highly contagious infection caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It causes swelling and redness and often feels itchy and painful. Viral conjunctivitis is the most common form, but you can also get pink eye from an allergen, fungus or parasite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/pink-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To prevent pink eye<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, wash your hands frequently, change your contact lenses, clean your eyeglasses regularly, throw out old makeup and makeup brushes, and don&#8217;t share personal products with people with conjunctivitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While pink eye typically improves on its own,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/eye-doctors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">see your doctor<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0if your eyes are very red, you have excessive eye pain, your vision is blurry, you&#8217;re extra sensitive to light, you notice a lot of mucus coming from your eye or you are getting worse instead of getting better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Corneal diseases<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many types of diseases can affect the cornea. Interestingly,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/corneal-conditions\/other-types-corneal-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">shingles<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can impact your cornea, causing swelling and scarring. Your doctor can prescribe an antiviral medication to help shingles disappear and prevent damage to your cornea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ocular herpes is another disease that can hurt the cornea. When a herpes virus infects the eye, sores called ocular herpes can develop on the outer layer of the eye and cornea and cause a severe eye infection called keratitis. At times, this can lead to blindness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/corneal-conditions\/other-types-corneal-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other diseases<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, can also affect the cornea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Common retina concerns<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002291.htm#:~:text=The%20retina%20is%20the%20light,optic%20nerve%20to%20the%20brain.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The retina\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">helps to focus images that come through the eye&#8217;s lens. It converts these images to electric signals and sends them along the optic nerve to the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Age-related macular degeneration<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/1999\/0701\/p99.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Age-related macular degeneration<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(AMD) can happen to the macula, which is part of the retina. Age-related macular degeneration is a prevalent cause of vision loss for seniors. While it doesn&#8217;t cause complete blindness, it does make it harder to see faces, read and drive. The progression of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/age-related-macular-degeneration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">age-related macular degeneration<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can depend on the person and is often slow, which is why it is essential to get regular eye exams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are two types of AMD. Dry AMD occurs when the macula gets thinner with age. It has three stages of progression, early, intermediate, and late, and there is no treatment for late dry AMD. While the early stage often doesn&#8217;t have symptoms, intermediate dry AMD can cause mild blurriness in your central vision or cause trouble seeing in low lighting. In the late stage, straight lines appear wavy, a blurry area appears near the center of your eye, and colors appear less bright than before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wet AMD is the second type. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye and damage the macula. Vision loss occurs faster with wet AMD. Any stage of dry AMD can turn into wet AMD, but wet AMD is always a late stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To avoid AMD, quit smoking, exercise regularly, keep blood pressure and cholesterol at acceptable levels, and eat lots of leafy green vegetables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Diabetic retinopathy<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/diabetic-retinopathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0causes vision loss in people with diabetes. If you have\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/cdc.gov\/diabetes\/managing\/diabetes-vision-loss.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, get a dilated\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/eye-doctors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">eye exam<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at least once a year.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/when-you-should-really-see-an-eye-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This exam<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can help detect diabetic retinopathy early and preserve your vision. Exercise, eat healthily, and take diabetes medications to prevent or delay vision loss. While this doesn&#8217;t always have symptoms, you might notice changes in your vision, have trouble reading or struggle to see faraway objects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Retinal detachment<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/retinal-detachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Retinal detachment<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0occurs when your retina disconnects from its usual position in the eye. When a small part of your retina is detached, you likely won&#8217;t have any symptoms. However, if more of your retina is disconnected, you will notice unclear vision, a lot of new floaters, flashes of light, and a dark shadow on the sides or in the middle of your eye. This is a medical emergency. If you experience this, go to the emergency room or your doctor&#8217;s office immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You are at increased risk if you have a family history of retinal detachment, severe eye injury, or eye surgery. Aging and eye injuries can both cause this condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Preventing age-related eye problems<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/tips-prevention\/seniors-eye-health-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Diseases like high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, diabetes, and heart disease can all damage your eyes, so it is essential to manage these conditions as you age.
