However, the most popular foods can also wreak havoc on our digestion. Doctors even see more patients <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/articles\/2017\/02\/research-connects-overeating-during-national-sporting-events-to-medical-problems.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for food-related medical problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around national holidays and big sports events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily for most people, game day indulgence is more likely to cause indigestion or heartburn than a medical emergency. Still, it\u2019s a good idea to snack strategically, so you can enjoy your favorite foods without discomfort. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked to gastroenterologists to learn about the digestive side effects of some of our favorite grub, along with pointers for keeping your gut happy as you chow down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the snack-by-snack analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Chicken wings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried, fatty and spicy: Chicken wings are a game day staple \u2014 and a trifecta of potential digestive distress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFried, fatty foods are going to relax the lower esophageal sphincter. It\u2019s like a door between the esophagus and stomach,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ganjllc.com\/physician\/andrew-s-boxer-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Andrew Boxer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist in New Jersey. \u201cThe stomach has stomach acid in it. If you open that door, you have a higher chance of acid getting up into the esophagus, which can lead to acid reflux and heartburn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spicy wing sauces and rubs can increase the potential for heartburn.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of the buffalo spicy sauces just have vinegar, water, salt and cayenne pepper,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kennethbrownmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kenneth Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Texas-based gastroenterologist. \u201cBut for a lot of people, that cayenne pepper can be an irritant.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another complication: Common dipping sauces, like ranch dressing, can be tough on digestion. Most store-bought varieties are made with processed oils that are hard to digest, which can lead to acid reflux and bloating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Pizza<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pizza is a crowd-pleaser, but its ingredients, including dairy and tomato sauce, can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, bloating or heartburn. Still, Boxer says you typically have to consume a lot of dairy to get diarrhea. \u201cIt\u2019s not like one cheese stick,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a decent amount of lactose, like a few pieces of pizza or a big bowl of cheese dip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re lactose intolerant or you feel uncomfortable after eating a lot of dairy, be mindful when mixing pizza and other cheese-based snacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTomato sauce is also going to increase the likelihood of heartburn and reflux,\u201d Boxer adds.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/can-you-eat-raw-garlic#downsides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raw garlic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/video\/one-major-side-effect-eating-140221719.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAABOBamGzw-owRaf8hsQquhsJOYOusynGFzkQL55AmCFwCu0yrJOuHcz99XBw9B9CW7y1UTrSLM9crpL10mO_Q2K2HGPKRsv_3QrY9p-q_6i6pSbvhia0ZIEDZK_k82JSnyIvtPmbdhMvdJ-ICWxXHu5XRWzeX6rk843RZ3dissKj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are harder to digest than their cooked counterparts. If these ingredients trigger bloating and gas for you, proceed with caution around garlicky, oniony sauces and dips.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Dips and spreads<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of dips, the options are limitless: buffalo dip, spinach and artichoke dip, bean dip, taco dip\u2026\u00a0 You\u2019re likely to find one or more at any snack table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen talking about dips, I\u2019d think about gas, bloating,\u201d Boxer says. This especially applies to cheesy, creamy dips: \u201cA lot of people have some degree of lactose intolerance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dips also tend to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/fodmap-diet-what-you-need-to-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-FODMAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ingredients, which can take an extra toll on your stomach. High-FODMAP foods, which include many dairy products, beans, garlic, onions and vegetables like cauliflower and artichokes, contain sugars that can be hard for the bacteria in the digestive system to break down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe foods that have a lot of these will create a lot of gas and bloating,\u201d Boxer says. Some people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome, may be especially sensitive to these types of foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Chili<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If spicy foods trigger discomfort for you, tread lightly with chili. As with pizza, a tomato-based stew could increase your risk of heartburn. Of course, you already know that fiber-filled beans are a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-musical-fruit-what-you-should-know-about-beans-and-gas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famous source of flatulence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChili is frequently really high in sodium, so it draws water into the intestines, which causes more bloating,\u201d Brown says. \u201cThat\u2019s assuming you\u2019re making the chili at your house. If you\u2019re buying the chili in a can, those have more additives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nachos<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nachos are a choose-your-own adventure snack: If you like yours with the works, that could include beans, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, jalapenos, meat and other toppings on a bed of fried tortilla chips. Any GI distress ultimately depends on which toppings you choose and which foods you\u2019re mixing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re eating a whole lot, and you\u2019re taking in a lot of different modalities of food at the same time, while still slowing down the intestines,\u201d Brown says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jalape\u00f1o poppers and fried snacks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your favorite game day foods are crispy and fried, watch out for heartburn. Jalape\u00f1o poppers \u2014 those delicious breaded peppers filled with cream cheese \u2014 can also create the perfect storm for an upset stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe jalape\u00f1o has capsaicin in it, which is a big irritant,\u201d Brown says. \u201cAs it goes through the digestive tract, it\u2019s an irritant the whole way through, which is why some people have bad diarrhea when they have really spicy foods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with gallbladder issues should be extra careful with fried foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor someone with known gallstones, it could bring about gallstone problems or gallbladder pain.\u201d Boxer says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h2>Ways to keep your digestion on track<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re already managing an issue like IBS, chronic acid reflux or pancreatitis, don\u2019t throw caution to the wind on game day. Even if you don\u2019t normally experience much gastric distress with rich foods, these tips can help you stay comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Stay hydrated<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrinking water will help keep everything moving so the stomach can digest these foods,\u201d Brown says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Watch the booze<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game day is often synonymous with cracking a cold one, but alcohol can put an added strain on your digestive system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlcohol actually slows gastric emptying,\u201d Brown says. \u201cIt increases gastric acid, and it has a neural effect that causes the lower esophageal sphincter to relax,\u201d which can lead to that dreaded heartburn.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Keep it moving<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting on the couch or lying back in your favorite recliner on a full stomach won\u2019t fix any discomfort you might be feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGet up and move around,\u201d Brown says. \u201cThe more moving around you do, the better it will stimulate digestion. Take a little break during commercials or halftime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Use antacids wisely<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to have your antacid of choice on hand if you know you\u2019ll be eating foods that trigger heartburn. But don\u2019t pregame with a handful of tablets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you do that on the front end, it may actually backfire,&#8221; Brown says. &#8220;It will raise the pH in your stomach and your body will compensate by creating more acid. It\u2019s better to take them when you start to feel symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Stay mindful<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us are distracted while snacking during a football game. Enjoying a few bites of your favorite foods probably won\u2019t cause issues with bloating, constipation, heartburn or diarrhea \u2014 just avoid mindless noshing that could lead to an upset stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor?
