It makes sense <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after all, we are living through multiple collective crises all at once, so the emphasis on self-care seems to be a coping mechanism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is honest-to-god, real self-care? This isn\u2019t the version that\u2019s popular on social media yet fails to actually improve your quality of life. Rather, it lifts you up mentally, emotionally and physically so you can truly live a life that feels\u00a0 nourishing and good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might feel guilty investing in yourself (especially if, like a lot of us, there are other people who demand your time and energy, like family and friends), but genuine self-care isn\u2019t about overindulgence or narcissism. Rather, it\u2019s about pouring into your own cup because you deserve to feel healthy and energized. If you\u2019re not convinced self-care is worth your time, take a look at the evidence: People who practice self-care report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6080382\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0735-7028.38.6.603\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved quality of life<\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Characteristics of real self-care<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be hard to pinpoint true self-care, because it looks different from person to person. Does your heart feel more open? Does your body relax? Are you able to stay in the present? It takes maintenance and a commitment to yourself and your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Products that promise self-care but don\u2019t deliver.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Companies are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/health\/la-he-business-of-self-care-20190508-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profiting massively off of self-care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it doesn\u2019t have to cost you anything. Consciously breathing during a stressful moment is an act of self-care because you are considering yourself and making yourself more comfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mimicking someone else\u2019s self-care. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What works for your friend or that celebrity you follow on social media won&#8217;t necessarily work for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What are the goals of self-care<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s helpful to know what you want to get out of self-care. This way, you know if you\u2019re on track to achieve them with your self-care routines. To get you started, here are some common goals:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Good physical health. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical health will give you more energy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a positive impact on your mental health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Less stress. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re less stressed, you can better respond to situations that tax your body and mind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Better relationships.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nourishing relationships have the power to make us healthier and happier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Calm mind. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A peaceful mind allows you to make decisions that serve you and don\u2019t steal your energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you may identify with some or all of these common self-care aims or you may not. Maintaining a regular bedtime and wake-up time can help achieve quality sleep.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Being active <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/in-depth\/exercise\/art-20048389\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves your mood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, therefore, your mental health. Instead, eat more veggies and fruits because they\u2019re good for you and keep you feeling fuller longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Living for social media.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trying to prove that your life is more fulfilling than others\u2019 lives can actually have the opposite effect. Spend time with people not because it gives you a photo op, but to cultivate connection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Excessive socializing. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social connections are good for us but if you find yourself drained by them, take a step back. Figure out what kind and quantity of socialization gives you energy and cut out the rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The benefits of real self-care<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True self-care can actually help your noggin.
