However, there are risks if you don&#8217;t prepare your child properly.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of thousands of kids get injured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hundreds-of-kids-per-day-injured-in-bike-accidents-study-finds\/\">bicycle <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accidents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenssafetynetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/bicycle_helmets_childhood_injury_cost_prevention.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bike helmets prevent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 52-60 percent of bike-related head injury deaths. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because helmets are so important for our safety when riding bicycles, we must teach our children and teens the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/headsup\/helmets\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits of helmets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how to use them properly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below, find some other ways to keep your kids safe when they want to go for a bike ride.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Teaching kids to ride<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to get your children <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/How-To-Get-Your-Child-To-Wear-a-Bicycle-Helmet.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comfortable with helmets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to ensure they wear them as soon as they start riding on scooters and tricycles. If your child rides on your bike with you in a bike accessory, be sure to put a helmet on them then, too. Here are some tips on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/kids\/bike-safety.html?ref=search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing the correct bike size.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Road safety<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some parents worry that teaching children to use hand signals on the bike will do more harm than good as they have to take their hands off the handlebars to signal. However, hand signaling is a crucial part of bike safety and should be taught to children and teens. Teach<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safewise.com\/bicycle-safety-for-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to look both ways before crossing a street, driveway, alleyway or wherever cars travel. It is essential to be aware of your surroundings while cycling. Cell phones should be stored away safely and not used while the bike is in motion. Taking phone calls or texting while riding your bike increases the risk of injury.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Remote area biking safety<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens and young adults might want to go mountain or dirt biking. Be sure they are using appropriate bikes and helmets for these activities. This causes chemical changes in the brain and sometimes damage to the brain cells. While you might lose consciousness from a concussion, that isn&#8217;t always the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/concussions.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs and symptoms of a concussion include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred or double vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of balance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion and saying things that don&#8217;t make sense<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being slow to answer questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/vomit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vomiting<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not remembering what happened<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not feeling well<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel sad, easily upset or angered, or nervous\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call the doctor or take them to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/urgent-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urgent care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately if think your child might have a concussion.
