{"id":20263,"date":"2023-02-15T13:25:28","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T18:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/?p=20263"},"modified":"2023-03-03T14:36:06","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T19:36:06","slug":"health-screenings-black-women-should-consider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/health-screenings-black-women-should-consider\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Screenings Black Women Should Consider"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences of discrimination <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/essay\/women-are-advancing-in-the-workplace-but-women-of-color-still-lag-behind\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against Black women in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reverberate in just about every aspect of our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrimination can limit Black women\u2019s educational and economic opportunities and hamper our access to quality healthcare. These circumstances don\u2019t occur in a vacuum, and they result in major health disparities compared to white Americans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDisparities play a huge role in the disease burden of Black women,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.keciagaither.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kecia Gaither<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ob-gyn in The Bronx, New York. Gaither says that many Black women face <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2022\/04\/21\/with-implicit-bias-hurting-patients-some-states-train-doctors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implicit bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the doctor\u2019s office and aren\u2019t offered many of the same treatment options or screenings as white women. They\u2019re also frequently underrepresented in the medical profession and in clinical trials, which further undermines specificity in treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These disparities add up: The all-cause mortality rate for Black people is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2775299\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 percent higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than for white people, which means more than 74,000 Black people die unnecessarily every single year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t an inherent health issue \u2014 and it\u2019s something we can push back against. To help stay ahead of the game, medical experts recommend that Black women prioritize the following types of health screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Genetic disorders and risk factors<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we face higher risks for certain illnesses and causes of death, screenings are invaluable tools that help providers keep tabs on Black women\u2019s health. Screening for health and genetic conditions can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/issue-brief\/racial-disparities-in-cancer-outcomes-screening-and-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve outcomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Black women and their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyourgenes.org\/genetic_diseases.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many populations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a higher risk of passing on specific conditions to their children. For Black families, one of the most notable is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6687629\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sickle cell disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Certain disorders arise from genes and identifiable mutations, which means parents can undergo genetic testing before they have children to see if they\u2019re at greater risk for passing on a condition. New treatments are also in development, including an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/experimental-gene-therapy-reverses-sickle-cell-disease-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experimental gene therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sickle cell disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to a genetic counselor about what kinds of screening panels are appropriate for you and your family. This can involve looking at your family health history to see if any health conditions consistently pop up. If you do find that you and your partner are carriers for a condition like sickle cell disease, reproductive options like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/gynecology_obstetrics\/specialty_areas\/fertility-center\/infertility-services\/preimplantation-genetic-testing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preimplantation genetic testing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in vitro fertilization can help you and your family sidestep certain risk factors for genetic disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Breast and cervical cancers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, Black women are more likely to die from some types of cancer than non-Black women, in part due to disparities in cancer diagnosis,\u201d says Melanie Hardy, director of genetic counseling services at Emory University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jscreen.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JScreen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Atlanta. \u201cLater diagnosis often means fewer treatment options and poorer outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a higher rate of breast cancer diagnosis in white women, Black women experience a nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/latest-news\/breast-cancer-death-rates-are-highest-for-black-women-again.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 percent higher mortality rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Covid-19 pandemic has only made matters worse; women across the nation delayed or canceled crucial mammograms to avoid Covid-19 exposure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Preventive Services Task Force <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf\/recommendation\/breast-cancer-screening\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends women age 50 to 75<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get a mammogram every year. Women 40 to 49 may also get mammograms based on their family history, other risk factors and recommendations from their physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEducating women on breast self-exams is a way to monitor any changes in the breasts and to have an expedited physical exam by your provider,\u201d says Gaither. \u201cThis helps to detect cancer earlier with greater options for treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cardiovascular health<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 60 percent of Black women over the age of 20 have heart disease. \u201cHeart disease is the \u2018silent killer,\u2019\u201d says Gaither. \u201cBlack women are significantly more likely to die of cardiac disease than white women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black women are also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goredforwomen.org\/en\/about-heart-disease-in-women\/facts\/heart-disease-in-african-american-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to have risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for heart disease, like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The best way to catch cardiovascular health issues is for your doctor to screen for these risk factors and pursue further testing if any results come back abnormal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black people are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/minorityhealth.hhs.gov\/omh\/browse.aspx?lvl=4&amp;lvlid=18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 percent more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be diagnosed with diabetes than white people. It\u2019s a complicated disease that affects every facet of daily life. It\u2019s also linked to other serious chronic illnesses that decrease both quality of life and lifespan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStarting at age 35, Black women should be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2783414\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screened for diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once every three years, even if they don\u2019t have any symptoms,\u201d says Gaither. A doctor can screen for diabetes with a simple blood test that measures your blood sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Pregnancy complications<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maternal mortality rate for Black women in the United States is alarming: We\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthequity\/features\/maternal-mortality\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to die in childbirth than white women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These dire statistics stem from racism and the health disparities it creates. For instance, Black women are at increased risk for various pregnancy-related complications. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000898.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which causes dangerously high blood pressure and damage to the kidneys and liver, affects up to 6 percent of all pregnancies, but like so many other conditions, Black women are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hcup-us.ahrq.gov\/reports\/statbriefs\/sb222-Preeclampsia-Eclampsia-Delivery-Trends.jsp?utm_source=ahrq&amp;utm_medium=en-1&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=1&amp;utm_campaign=ahrq_en4_25_2017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop it than white women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ob-gyns are supposed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK447464\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screen women for preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other pregnancy-related conditions throughout gestation. They check pregnant women\u2019s blood pressure at prenatal appointments to note any new increases in blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which is often one of the first signs of preeclampsia.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Talk to your primary care provider about health screenings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health screenings are readily accessible to most people who regularly visit a primary care provider. Many are conducted at annual physicals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your chosen provider hasn\u2019t recently screened you for conditions that disproportionately affect Black women, you have a few options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request health screenings at your next appointment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your doctor to order labs between visits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a new provider who prioritizes health screenings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t leave your health to chance.
