I was more the GI Joe type. Throughout my early life, while I desired being a mom, I never really longed for it. I expected it would come when I was ready. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I began my journey naively. <\/span>Throughout my life, I was taught to avoid pregnancy, so I didn\u2019t know how to navigate what happens when it\u2019s suddenly taken away.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42 years old, after two miscarriages, seven<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and one recently unsuccessful embryo transfer (in which an embryo is placed into the uterus), my dreams of motherhood feel out of reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While miscarriages can cause real bodily pain, losing an embryo is different. There are no noticeable changes or symptoms. All you\u2019re left with is a negative pregnancy test. IVF failure affects more couples than is readily acknowledged. In general, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/art\/reports\/2019\/pdf\/2019-Report-ART-Fertility-Clinic-National-Summary-h.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% of people with uteruses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ages 15 to 49 have trouble getting pregnant or carrying pregnancy to term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF typically has a 56.7 percent success rate for people under the age of 35 after one egg retrieval, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/art\/reports\/2019\/pdf\/2019-Report-ART-Fertility-Clinic-National-Summary-h.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For people ages 38 to 40, that drops to 26.9 percent, And sadly, for people above age 40, it drops to 9.2 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data illustrates just how many people deal with unsuccessful treatments\u00a0 \u2014 and why the grief that comes along with them deserves more recognition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, I&#8217;ve struggled with feeling like I&#8217;ve failed at womanhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mourned my pregnancy losses intensely. But the loss of my one and only embryo felt different. There&#8217;s power in telling my story to illuminate the pain that some people go through to be parents. You&#8217;re not alone and there are resources out there for anyone going through a similar dilemma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>An invisible burden<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he immeasurable loss of a failed embryo transfer can\u2019t be articulated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the death of a dream, or an intention.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countless tools are available online about how to prepare your body for an embryo transfer and hopefully, a pregnancy. But there\u2019s sparse advice for how to navigate the emotional and physical effects of how to move forward after a poor outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8669410\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly half of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> facing infertility report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress and depression levels from infertility can feel as intense as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthcare.utah.edu\/healthfeed\/postings\/2019\/06\/infertility-ptsc.php#:~:text=Jamie%20Hales%2C%20a%20licensed%20clinical,for%20both%20women%20and%20men.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receiving news of a cancer diagnosis.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In my own journey, I noticed myself experiencing a type of grief I was unaware of before struggling to have a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invisible or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2008-09330-011\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disenfranchised grief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d is defined as grief resulting from a significant loss that isn\u2019t openly acknowledged or mourned by society.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of universal support and social validation makes this type of bereavement harder to cope with.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gabriela Casellato, a clinical psychologist and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/casellato.org\/publicacoes\/#artigos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grief specialist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, describes the grief couples often feel post-embryo loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDue to feeling shame and failure many couples grieve in an isolated, silent way,\u201d she says. \u201cThis fosters suffering.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my life, I felt this residual trauma manifest in subtle ways. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the unbearable act of returning to a support group you thought you\u2019d graduated from. It\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distancing yourself from close friends because you don\u2019t want them to have to hear you complain anymore.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, it\u2019s holding on to abnormal embryos. I\u2019ll never use them, and yet I can\u2019t let them go either.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Resource rut<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are limited resources on how to cope with the weight of this hidden, mental anguish. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When IVF works, we hear about it \u2013 on social media, anecdotally, and from celebrities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsuccessful outcomes are discussed less often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representation for this community is rare, but things are changing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/19\/health\/ivf-women-jennifer-aniston-wellness-cec\/index.html#:~:text=Actress%20Jennifer%20Aniston%20opened%20up,she%20has%20%22zero%20regrets.%22&amp;text=CNN%20talked%20to%20four%20women,long%20waits%2C%20hope%20and%20disappointment.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actress Jennifer Aniston<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently revealed she had tried IVF, but it hadn\u2019t worked. She moved on child-free, not by choice, yet appears to be happy and thriving. Sportscaster Erin Andrews has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/tv\/celebrity\/erin-andrews-9-year-ivf-journey-has-been-the-most-challenging-part-of-her-life\/ar-AA16MzrU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussed her ongoing IVF journey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of almost a decade. Her reveal felt refreshingly honest and real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casellato encourages more couples to break barriers of silence by sharing similar experiences with others. Building a narrative around the story can help combat guilt and self punishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But grievers must be self aware too. Dr. Kati Morton, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/katimorton.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical psychologist <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and licensed marriage and family therapist based in Austin, Texas, says that means recognizing personal triggers, like social media. Unfollowing certain accounts can be really beneficial for your mental health.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s help out there in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/therapist-counselors\">therapy<\/a>, books, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silentsorority.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silent Sorority<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a memoir by someone who completed IVF and didn\u2019t become a mom, and free, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resolve.org\/get-help\/online-support-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual support groups.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories that end without a baby are less shared, but vital. They are reminders that people are not solely defined or valued by their parental status. All these measures are fundamental to increasing cultural awareness and mitigating some of the risks for mourners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for me, I\u2019d always believed failure was the opposite of success, but I&#8217;ve learned that it\u2019s just a component of it.
