The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/news\/2004\/02\/report-sets-dietary-intake-levels-for-water-salt-and-potassium-to-maintain-health-and-reduce-chronic-disease-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend a daily water intake <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is, water coming from both foods and beverages <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 3.7 liters (about 15.5 cups) for adult men and 2.7 liters (about 11.5 cups) for adult women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been crushing a goal to drink more water (or, perhaps, overindulging in watermelon), that could cause you to pee more. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctor\/lauren-schulz-do-302342\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lauren Schulz,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a urologist based in New York City, says there\u2019s no strict number of times someone should pee per day. \u201cDepending on your fluid intake, it may be normal to urinate as often as every two to three hours,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve noticed any abnormal peeing patterns, it\u2019s best to talk to your primary care provider or a urologist. The bottom line: \u201cIf something changes from your normal and you don\u2019t know why, it\u2019s always a cause for concern,\u201d says Schulz. Here\u2019s a primer on what might be causing you to urinate more frequently, aside from hydration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Bladder irritants<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bladder irritants, including alcoholic, caffeinated, sparkling, acidic or diuretic beverages, can lead to increased urination for multiple reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thepelvicdancefloor?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pelvic floor physical therapist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.momlifehealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MomLife Health and Wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Medfield, Massachusetts, notes that while coffee&#8217;s caffeine content causes the muscle around the bladder to contract more often, its acidity can also be an irritant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your favorite beverage meets the criteria above, that doesn\u2019t mean saying goodbye forever. Instead, Jeffrey-Thomas recommends identifying possible irritants by removing them for a few days before reintroducing them, or alternating between bladder-irritating beverages and water. \u201cA 3:1 ratio of plain old boring water to other stuff tends to be that happy, magic moment where we&#8217;re not having that bladder irritation anymore,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opposite end of the spectrum, not drinking enough water may cause frequent urination, as concentrated urine can also irritate the bladder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Stress and anxiety<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever made a last-minute dash to the bathroom before a big event, you know stress, anxiety or even excitement can bring on the potty dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith anxiety, the pelvic floor muscles tense up around the urethra, squeezing it, which induces the urge to urinate,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctor\/elizabeth-kavaler-md-210147\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist at Total Urology Care of New York in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The urge usually calms down once you do. \u201cRelaxing the muscles, breathing deeply, applying a heating pad or taking a hot bath will ease the tension on the muscles and reduce the pressure around the urethra,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Habit<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One surprising reason behind more frequent bathroom breaks? Habit. While it is practical to use the bathroom before bed or a long car ride, avoid using the bathroom just because it\u2019s there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUrinating is Pavlovian: If you urinate a lot, you will get the urge a lot,\u201d Kavaler says. \u201cIf you use the bathroom every time you pass one, then you will feel the urge to go every time you pass a bathroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To break the habit of constant bathroom breaks, Schulz recommends a simple suppression exercise. \u201cAs long as there is no pain or leakage while trying to suppress the urge to urinate, I recommend using a timer on your phone to suppress urges to urinate in five- to 15-minute increments,\u201d she says. \u201cWait until the third urge to urinate. This change will teach your brain and bladder to hold more urine for a longer period of time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Urinary tract infections<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/how-to-get-rid-of-a-uti-quickly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are perhaps the most infamous cause of increased urination. Studies show that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3749018\/#:~:text=Urinary%20tract%20infections%20(UTIs)%20are,causes%20UTIs%20in%20most%20patients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half of women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and AFAB people will get a UTI in their lifetime. Some telltale signs of these pesky infections include the uncomfortable feeling of needing to pee, even right after going, along with a burning feeling when urinating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTIs are caused by bacteria infecting the urinary tract and often the bladder. While some experts think they may be more common in women due to anatomy or hormones, men also get UTIs. If you think you have a UTI, head to a doctor who can prescribe antibiotics to help kick the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Overactive bladder<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millions of Americans live with overactive bladder symptoms. An overactive bladder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/overactive-bladder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355715\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contracts involuntarily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause the urge to pee even without a full bladder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three hallmarks of an overactive bladder diagnosis are peeing more frequently than every two to four hours; getting intense, immediate urges to pee; and waking up overnight to pee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle modifications, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/procedure\/pelvic-floor-disorders-3257\">pelvic floor therapy<\/a> and medication can help treat an overactive bladder.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pelvic floor dysfunction<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic floor muscles support the bladder and play an important role in starting and stopping urination. Pelvic floor dysfunction might cause urine leaks or the feeling of always needing to pee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, tense pelvic floor muscles can make it difficult for the bladder to fully relax and release urine. \u201cIt almost creates this perpetual state of \u2018Do I need to go a little bit?\u2019 all the time,\u201d Jeffrey-Thomas says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor can refer you to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/procedure\/pelvic-floor-disorders-3257\">pelvic floor physical therapist<\/a> who can help treat pelvic floor dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pregnancy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women may joke that they are eating for two, but why can it feel like pregnancy is making you pee for two?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are multiple reasons pregnancy is accompanied by extra trips to the restroom. In early pregnancy, hormones can lead to an increased urge to urinate, while in later pregnancy, a growing baby can mean the uterus and bladder get a bit more cramped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, pregnancy shouldn\u2019t feel like one long bathroom break. Bladder training can make frequent urination in pregnancy more manageable.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Diabetes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination may be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes. When someone with diabetes has high blood sugar, the pancreas doesn\u2019t make enough insulin to lower their levels. One way the body tries to combat high blood sugar is by peeing out the extra glucose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes include excessive thirst and hunger, unintentional weight loss and fatigue.
