However, with these post-winter perks comes allergy season\u2014a time when pollen and mold spores mess with the nasal passages of roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db460.htm#section_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 4 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obvious solution to your springtime sniffles would be to pop an antihistamine and call it a day, right? But what if your symptoms aren\u2019t being caused by allergies?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the one-two punch of seasonal allergy symptoms intensifying, both in severity and duration (more on that in a minute), and the buffet of respiratory illnesses lingering in the air these days, distinguishing between seasonal allergy, cold and COVID-19 symptoms has become a tricky business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s become tricky, but not impossible to navigate, allergists say. Despite overlapping symptoms, there are key differentiating factors between each illness that can help you get to the bottom of why you feel so icky.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Why your seasonal allergy symptoms feel worse than usual<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few different notable seasonal allergies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/types-of-allergies\/pollen-allergy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the allergy trigger most likely to trip up your immune system. From February to May, tree pollen becomes rampant. From April to June, people allergic to grass might see their allergies flare up. And from August to November, weeds release the most pollen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/outdoor-allergens-ttr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor molds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (think: rotting wood, compost piles) can also cause allergy symptoms. Similar to pollen, molds reproduce by spreading spores through the air. Mold spore counts tend to peak in July in warm states and October in colder ones, while maintaining a year-round presence in the South and on the West Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your seasonal allergies seem more intense and relentless than they used to be, you\u2019re not imagining things. Much of the reason for this can be attributed to climate change. According to the CDC, warmer temperatures, shifts in precipitation patterns and more carbon dioxide emissions are among <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/effects\/pollen-health.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affecting the duration and timing of pollen season and the levels of pollen plants produce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor most people who are sensitive to a variety of trees, grasses and weeds, this will likely cause a significant worsening of symptoms,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.mountsinai.org\/carolyn-kwiat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Carolyn Kwiat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergy and immunology specialist based in New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/effects\/allergen.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weather extremes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all have an impact on certain environmental allergens, she adds. Rainfall decreases total airborne allergens, for instance, so droughts can worsen flares in symptoms. On the flip side, floods and intense tropical storms have been shown to increase mold exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As allergy symptoms worsen, it can be hard to tell if you\u2019re experiencing allergies or something else, like COVID-19 or a common cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeasonal allergies, colds and COVID-19 can all cause a runny nose, congestion, fatigue and a general sense of malaise,\u201d Kwiat says. \u201cSevere nasal congestion, in particular, can lead to postnasal drip and a sore throat, which can make differentiating between the three even more difficult.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Do you have seasonal allergies?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the telltale signs allergists recommend looking out for that can indicate which illness you\u2019re probably up against.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s most likely seasonal allergies if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptom onset is abrupt and specifically timed.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If symptoms hit quickly, and mainly appear when the seasons change or on days with high pollen counts, they\u2019re probably because of environmental allergies, Kwiat says. Colds and COVID-19 tend to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/coronavirus\/in-depth\/covid-19-cold-flu-and-allergies-differences\/art-20503981\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gradually set in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (never on a specific timetable, probably following contact with others who are sick), with symptoms usually appearing one to three days after exposure for a cold and two to 14 days for COVID-19.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms are chronic and fluctuate in severity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Seasonal allergy symptoms \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 last the entire season and tend to fluctuate based on allergen exposure levels. They improve once the allergen is no longer present. Cold and COVID-19 symptoms, on the other hand, are because of contracting a virus. They start out strong, then taper off as your body fights the infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Besides the sneezing and stuffy nose, you\u2019re also super-itchy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Itchiness of the eyes, ears, nose, throat and skin is a predominant symptom of allergies not characteristic of the common cold or COVID-19. \u201cThe itching comes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/what-makes-us-itch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specifically from histamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a substance released by the body during an allergic response to a trigger,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellnow.com\/allergy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jeanne Lomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of allergy and immunology at WellNow Allergy in New York.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s less likely seasonal allergies if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You have a fever.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAllergies typically don\u2019t cause a fever, which is a body temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher,\u201d Kwiat says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/fever.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections cause most fevers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While colds can sometimes cause them, fevers appear much more frequently with COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Do you have a cold?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s most likely a cold if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Your symptoms start during cold weather.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Seasonal allergies are typically less severe in the winter months, since no pollen is in the air, Kwiat says. We\u2019re more likely to catch a cold or COVID-19 during cold weather. Staying inside increases our contact with others \u2014 and the odds of contracting circulating viruses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>One of your first symptoms is a sore throat.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Roughly half of all people with colds report a tickly, sore throat as their first symptom, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/12342-common-cold\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your mucus changes color.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Discharge from your nose usually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/common-cold\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351605\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starts out clear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during a cold, then becomes thicker and turns yellow or green as the cold runs its course. With allergies, mucus tends to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/allergy-symptoms\/rhinitis-nasal-allergy-hayfever\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stay clear, thin and watery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s less likely a cold if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You have a persistent dry cough.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/respiratory-illness-symptoms-chart-coronavirus-flu-cold-allergies.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAFA), dry coughs are more prevalent with allergies and COVID-19 than they are with colds. Colds tend to cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/21888-dry-cough-and-chest-tightness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild, but wet coughs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s most likely COVID-19 if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You\u2019re having trouble breathing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cCOVID-19 is more likely to cause severe respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath,\u201d Kwiat says. Seasonal allergies and colds don\u2019t usually trigger breathing issues unless there\u2019s an underlying respiratory condition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/respiratory-illness-symptoms-chart-coronavirus-flu-cold-allergies.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>You\u2019ve lost your sense of taste and\/or smell.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> More than 8 in 10 people with COVID-19 may lose their sense of smell and taste, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/16708-loss-of-taste-and-smell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Allergies and colds can mess with your sense of smell due to the nasal congestion, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003052.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s a temporary thing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You\u2019re experiencing flu-like symptoms.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSimilar to the flu or other systemic viral infections, COVID-19 is more likely to cause fever, chills, headaches, severe body aches, nausea and diarrhea,\u201d Lomas says, all of which are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/respiratory-illness-symptoms-chart-coronavirus-flu-cold-allergies.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly unlikely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in allergies and colds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s less likely it\u2019s COVID-19 if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You\u2019re constantly sneezing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Frequent sneezing is more common in allergies and colds than COVID-19, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/respiratory-illness-symptoms-chart-coronavirus-flu-cold-allergies.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AAFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s not clear as to why, but one possible theory could be that allergies and colds typically set up shop in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279543\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upper respiratory tract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (nose and throat), while COVID-19 seems to favor the lower (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/covid\/lungs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lungs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The benefits of getting tested for allergies<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To minimize seasonal allergy symptoms and better differentiate between respiratory illnesses, you might want to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/allergists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find an allergist near you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get skin testing done to determine your specific allergy triggers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helpful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/Tools-for-the-Public\/Conditions-Library\/Allergies\/Allergic-Reactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter strategies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for allergy relief include steering clear of the allergens that make your immune system react, popping antihistamines, and wearing a mask when you\u2019re out and about. Here are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/doctors-debate-allergy-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some comparisons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the types of over-the-counter allergy meds you might find at the pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another option for seasonal allergies is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/allergists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen immunotherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is given via shots or tablets. \u201cIt works by giving you small, controlled doses of what you\u2019re allergic to and helps the body build up tolerance over time,\u201d Lomas says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your immune system will eventually stop recognizing these benign substances as harmful \u2014 so when future illnesses strike, you\u2019ll have a much better idea of what you\u2019re fighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
