A network of federal, state and local agencies is responsible for everything from maintaining pipes to treating wastewater to protecting groundwater and other natural resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because your water supply is so particular to your location, get familiar with your local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ccr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA Consumer Confidence Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCR). This is an annual summation of water quality issues relevant to your region, and it may be posted on your local government website. You can also look up your CCR <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ordspub.epa.gov\/ords\/safewater\/f?p=ccr_wyl:102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another independent resource is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mytapwater.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyTapWater.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which collects data from all over the United States from official sources to generate reports laying out levels of contaminants like copper and lead and any known violations of the federal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Drinking Water Act.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pollution, impurities and hardness: What they mean for you<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the US has a great water system, the quality of your water can vary depending on where it comes from and where it\u2019s delivered \u2014 a healthy water treatment system, for example, can\u2019t overcome deteriorating lead pipes in an individual\u2019s home. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/drinking\/contamination.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germs and chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from agricultural runoff, industrial accidents and other situations, can also sometimes cause problems in drinking water. If your water is contaminated for some reason, the water utility in your area is required to tell you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/emergency\/drinking\/drinking-water-advisories\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via a notice or drinking water advisory.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/drinking\/contamination\/chemicals.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can contaminate drinking water include arsenic, copper, lead, nitrates and radon. These contaminants can cause symptoms including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea, vomiting, headaches, and at their worst, cancer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/drinking\/contamination\/germs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waterborne germs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can show up in drinking water, like E. coli and norovirus, stem from waste pollution, whether human or animal. These can also cause uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. You\u2019re definitely clued into water filtration products if you like camping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devices or systems that claim to purify water can be as big as a house or as small as a tube of lip balm. What\u2019s most important to understand about each product is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/drinking\/home-water-treatment\/water-filters.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what it\u2019s claiming to keep out of your water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some insist they\u2019re removing germs or bacteria, others say they\u2019ll eliminate lead or \u201cheavy metals\u201d and still more simply assert that they make your water taste better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One easy way to determine filter quality is to look at a product\u2019s packaging for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.org\/about-nsf\/nsf-mark\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSF mark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an internationally recognized certification that the product meets local public health standards as verified by independent third-party tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of flashy, boring and downright confusing information online about water quality and how it relates to health.
