For one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-deprivation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep deficiency can cause physical health issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like kidney and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bloodpressure\/sleep.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stroke and diabetes. It also has a cyclical relationship with mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/sleep-and-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10-18% of American adults experience sleep issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number jumps to 50-80% when looking at a typical psychiatric office\u2019s patients. These numbers seem to suggest a connection between mental health and sleep. In particular, patients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are the most likely to experience some kind of difficulty sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health has a unique relationship to sleep, since many conditions can cause sleep problems or have unique ways of impacting sleep. Understanding the details of these conditions and how they interact with one another can help identify potential issues and seek treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What are the common mental health conditions?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health conditions can affect a person\u2019s cognitive ability, emotions and behavior. They can impact a person\u2019s day-to-day life, and they can vary in severity from mild to extreme. There is a wide range of conditions that can impact a person\u2019s mental health, and each has its own symptoms and treatment options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Depression<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression is usually accompanied by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in engaging in various activities. This can include neglecting personal responsibilities and duties such as hygiene, work, school or relationships. A 2020 study by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimated that within a year, 21 million Americans (or 8.4% of the population) had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/major-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experienced a major depressive episode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Anxiety disorders<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though they can express themselves in different ways, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/anxiety-disorders\/what-are-anxiety-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are generally characterized by excessive fear or worry that can interfere with a person\u2019s daily life. This includes panic disorders. According to the Anxiety &amp; Depression Association of America (ADAA), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/facts-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting more than 19% of adults annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Phobic disorder<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.gov\/what-to-look-for\/anxiety-disorders\/phobias\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phobic disorder, or phobia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a type of anxiety disorder in which an individual experiences intense fear or revulsion to an object or situation. People with phobias will react to a specific phenomenon, and in some cases, alter their lifestyle to avoid contact with a phobia trigger. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/specific-phobia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobias are estimated to affect 12.5% of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during their lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often have intrusive thoughts and engage in unwanted, repetitive behaviors to reduce anxiety. Potential obsessive thoughts include dwelling on germs and cleanliness or feelings of aggression. Compulsive behavior includes repeatedly counting something or washing hands an excessive amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in many cases these can be seen as normal behavior, these behaviors and thoughts can be categorized as OCD when they are uncontrollable or begin to interfere with an individual\u2019s life. NIMH identifies OCD as a condition affecting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.2% of the US population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with women accounting for three times as many cases as men.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Schizophrenia<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may experience symptoms such as disordered thinking, hallucinations and delusions that can limit their ability to function normally. Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/mental-health-disorder-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% of American adults experience schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In men, symptoms begin to appear during their late teens or early 20s. In women, symptoms typically develop later, with schizophrenic behavior developing into their 20s or 30s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bipolar disorder<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/bipolardisorder.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience extreme shifts in mood and energy. These shifts are categorized into manic episodes (characterized by euphoria or irritability) and depressive episodes (characterized by sadness, indifference, and depression). The frequency and nature of these episodes can help to diagnose which type of bipolar disorder a person is experiencing as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many people experience trauma inevitably in life, these events have the potential to trigger <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/ptsd\/what-is-ptsd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This condition can cause symptoms like nightmares, intense anxiety, and flashbacks. It can also co-occur with other conditions such as depression, substance use and memory disorders. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/understand\/common\/common_adults.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD affects 5% of adults each year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How is mental health related to sleep?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/how-sleep-deprivation-can-affect-your-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health and sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are closely related. In 2021, researchers from the CDC observed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2021\/20_0573.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship between sleep and mental distress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and found that participants who averaged less than 6 hours of sleep were 2.5 times more likely to experience frequent mental distress. Although this simply shows a strong correlation between the two and not a causality, you can make the connection that lack of sleep can worsen symptoms of a mental health disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in clinical samples, nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3181883\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75% of depressed patients reported symptoms of insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to various ways of making it difficult for people to get to sleep, sleep disorders can have other equally undesirable effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Insomnia disorder<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a sleep disorder that potentially affects a person\u2019s ability to sleep, as well as the restfulness of sleep when it occurs. Short-term bouts of insomnia may be brought about by stress or other lifestyle changes. Once a person adjusts to a new environment or the stressor goes away, insomnia may end as well. Studies on insomnia worldwide vary. Since it is often a comorbidity with other conditions, it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5353813\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently missed by primary care doctors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sleep apnea<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-apnea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will unknowingly experience difficulty breathing while sleeping, therefore limiting the intake of oxygen during the night. Although sleep apnea may look like loud snoring, it\u2019s also accompanied by other symptoms such as gasping and choking during the night, and fatigue during the day time. Sleep apnea affects about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8508429\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% of US adults between the ages of 30 and 70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Non-rapid eye movement sleep arousal disorders (NREM)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6558250\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NREM disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is characterized by sleep behaviors such as sleepwalking and sleep terrors. This condition is sometimes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9397000\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comorbidity with another sleep condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as RLS, insomnia or sleep apnea. As a result, treating that other condition may have a positive effect on NREM.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Nightmare disorder<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A patient experiencing a nightmare disorder has frequent or recurring disturbing nightmares. These movements can include violent movements that result in harm to the patient themselves or nearby sleepers. RBD impacts an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/41\/2\/zsx197\/4690595\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% of adults between 40 and 80<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Narcolepsy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/narcolepsy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narcolepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include extreme fatigue during the day, including uncontrollable sleep.
