Navigating healthcare on your own for the first time can feel overwhelming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news? You have lots of options. Below, we\u2019ll explain all the nuts and bolts of healthcare for new college grads, according to experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Health insurance options for college graduates<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you have no known medical problems, healthcare coverage is incredibly important. \u201cMedical expenses can arise unexpectedly, and having insurance can protect you from financial hardship,\u201d says Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.judywrightmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy Wright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Your guardians\u2019 health insurance plan<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re under age 26 and you\u2019re currently on your parents\u2019 or guardians\u2019 health insurance plan, you can consider staying on it. \u201cThis can be a great option if your parents have a good plan that covers your health needs,\u201d says Wright. If you\u2019re moving to a new city, be sure your parents\u2019 plan will cover care in that area. (Most national plans do, according to Wright).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you decide to stay on your parents\u2019 plan, be aware of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-privacy-do-you-have-on-your-parents-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential privacy concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) has a privacy rule that lets patients ask their insurance provider not to send an explanation of benefit (EOB) form to their parents. But your insurance may or may not honor your request. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-privacy-do-you-have-on-your-parents-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have extra levels of privacy when it comes to reproductive or drug care, so it\u2019s important to do your research if you\u2019re worried about privacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A student health insurance plan<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re pursuing a graduate degree right after college, Wright says many colleges and universities offer student health plans that provide basic coverage at an affordable cost\u2014a great option if you don\u2019t have the option of being covered under a guardian\u2019s plan, or if you\u2019d rather have your own insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>An employer\u2019s health insurance plan<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who already have a job lined up post-graduation, health insurance may be a benefit. \u201cFor some employment, this benefit may kick in immediately on the start date,\u201d says Wright. But some employers have a \u201cprobation period,\u201d which basically means you have to wait a certain amount of time for your health insurance to kick in. You should be able to access insurance within 90 days of your start-date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A marketplace insurance plan<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re not out of options if you don\u2019t fit the above scenarios. Wright says the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a variety of health insurance plans that may be more affordable than private plans for young college grads who don\u2019t have access to other types of insurance plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medicaid<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, if you can\u2019t afford ACA plans, you may be eligible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicaid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a state-driven government program that provides health insurance to low-income individuals and families. Each year, Medicaid serves around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/10-things-to-know-about-medicaid-setting-the-facts-straight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 5 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 \u201cEligibility and coverage vary from state to state, so it\u2019s important to check in with your state\u2019s Medicaid program so see if you\u2019re eligible,\u201d Wright says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How to choose the best insurance plan for you<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you sign up for insurance, take some time to understand your options. \u201cIt can be pretty confusing to know what a copay, deductible, max out-of-pocket amount, and pre-existing condition limitations mean,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Janice Johnston, co-founder and medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redirecthealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redirect Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMake sure you understand the words in front of you beforehand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you do your homework, determine the best plan for you. For example, if you are generally healthy and don\u2019t expect to have any health issues, you may feel comfortable with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/glossary\/premium\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower premium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (monthly or annual payment) and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/glossary\/deductible\/#:\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher deductible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the amount of money you need to pay out-of-pocket before your plan starts covering a portion of the cost). On the flipside, if you have a health condition that needs ongoing management, you might feel better paying more every month for a plan with a lower deductible. \u201cEach plan has different benefits and costs, so it\u2019s important to choose a plan that fits both your needs and budget,\u201d says Wright.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What to do when you get new health insurance<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you officially have insurance, you may want to establish care with new medical providers or continue care with your current providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to keep up with your current providers, check if they still take your insurance and be sure to provide them with your new insurance plan information.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cMost primary care providers take most plans, but not certain plans,\u201d says Johnston.\u201d It\u2019s good to check with your provider if you want to stay with them to see if they are under that new plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you\u2019re moving to a new city, or your current provider won\u2019t accept your health insurance, you\u2019ll want to establish care with new medical providers. You can use Zocdoc to filter providers by insurance plan, and look at reviews to see who might be the best fit for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, most insurance plans will cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-the-most-common-doctors-appointments-cost\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these preventative care measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019ll want to keep in mind in your post-college life, free of charge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At minimum, Wright recommends establishing care with a primary care provider who can manage your healthcare. Your PCP can help you stay on track with vaccines and screenings. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, most insurance plans will cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-the-most-common-doctors-appointments-cost\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these preventative care measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019ll want to keep in mind in your post-college life, free of charge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCPs can refer you to specialists if a new health issue comes up, or if you have a health concern that\u2019s too complicated for them to manage alone (such as a severe mental illness or uncontrolled asthma).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking the steps to secure insurance and find a medical provider you trust can take time and energy, but hopefully, the process will ultimately save you money\u2014and, more importantly, safeguard your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor?
