{"id":20565,"date":"2023-06-13T14:19:28","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T19:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/?p=20565"},"modified":"2023-06-20T12:37:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T17:37:00","slug":"3-tips-on-finding-a-lgbtq-affirming-therapist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/3-tips-on-finding-a-lgbtq-affirming-therapist\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Tips on Finding an LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US has considered or passed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights?impact=&amp;state=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record number of bills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that threaten LGBTQ+ rights in the past few years \u2014 which has greatly impacted the mental health of queer Americans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trevor Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found in its 2023 survey that nearly 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ people ages 13 to 24, felt their mental health was poor all or most of the time during 2022 due to this onslaught of legislation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0279420\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found an uptick in searches about suicide around the passing of anti-trans legislation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already, queer adults are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Your-Journey\/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions\/LGBTQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as heterosexual people to experience mental illness, and transgender folks are almost four times as likely to experience mental health conditions as cisgender people. They can also all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/gaps-in-health-care-among-lgbt-community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get the mental healthcare they need. While in some places it can simply be challenging to find providers who specialize in LGTBQ+ issues, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healor.com\/raj-singhmd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Raj Singh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an internist based in Nevada, says queer folks also might delay care due to \u201cfear of judgment or mistreatment by medical providers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or a loved one is experiencing an immediate mental health crisis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nami.org\/Home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NAMI) has a wealth of resources. If you\u2019re not currently in crisis, but have recently been experiencing signs of anxiety or depression, finding mental health care is vital to prevent symptoms from worsening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can see a primary care provider for a mental health evaluation, you can also book an appointment with a therapist directly. Finding a therapist who can help you deftly navigate the unique challenges of being queer can be life changing. We talked to experts for some tips on how to seamlessly find your best, queer-affirming match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1. Understand the term \u2018queer-affirming\u2019 healthcare.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking for a therapist, you might see providers offering queer-friendly or queer-affirming healthcare. While queer-friendly healthcare is a general definition describing healthcare that aims to be non-discriminatory and open to queer clients, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/sex\/2014\/04\/understanding-lgbtq-affirmative-psychotherapy#9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">queer-affirming care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a bit more depth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnlike general therapy or queer-friendly therapy, queer-affirming therapy centers on the needs and the specific experiences of the queer community and addresses issues such as homophobia, transphobia, and societal stigma,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honutherapy.com\/blog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lana Lipe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a licensed clinical social worker.\u201cIt rejects the notion that being queer is a problem that needs to be fixed or normalized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core message of LGBTQ-affirming therapy is that being queer is worthy of celebration despite society telling us otherwise. This is invaluable for people who have faced discrimination due to their identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFear and uncertainty about the future, as well as discrimination and harassment, can cause significant mental and physical health challenges for LGBTQ+ people,\u201d says Lipe. \u201cIt is crucial for all healthcare professionals to be aware of these patterns and provide targeted support for queer clients and our community.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>2. Use your network.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking for a new therapist, licensed clinical social worker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/laurasilverstein.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Silverstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends patients \u201cseek out recommendations from other people in the community, queer community organizations, or online forums.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also find queer-affirming therapists on Zocdoc by inputting \u201cLGBT Care\u201d as your visit reason. From there, you can filter by specialty, insurance and other filters, to see what therapists are available in your area. Pay attention to meaningful details.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer people are accustomed to carefully navigating healthcare rather than just approaching it without worry. This is doubly important in therapy, where the effectiveness of care depends on the rapport and unity built between therapist and client.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the search for a therapist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/laurasilverstein.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Silverstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a licensed clinical social worker, recommends patients, \u201cpay close attention to the words practitioners use on their websites and bios.\u201d Look to see if they mention specializing in LGBTQ issues. Silverstein recommends asking yourself some of these questions based on what you see on their profiles:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the language they use resonate with you?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they work with couples, do they call it \u2018couples therapy\u2019 or \u2018marriage counseling\u2019?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they use the words \u2018partners,\u2019 or \u2018husband\u2019 and \u2018wife\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, before you have your first visit with a therapist, you have a consultation call. During these calls with potential therapists you can ask about their stance on LGBTQ issues and how they may support the community, Silverstein says. Mental Health America has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screening.mhanational.org\/content\/https-screening-mhanational-org-content-questions-help-qtbipoc-find-affirming-mental-health-providers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a handy document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contains examples of relevant questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also might want to pay attention to the office\u2019s environment on the first visit. The best queer-affirming providers \u201ccreate an inclusive office environment by providing gender-neutral bathrooms, using gender-neutral language, and having art displays that support LGBTQ rights,\u201d Singh says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing I do when vetting out potential therapists is to \u201ctrust your gut,\u201d Silverstein says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a therapist?
