This means that the way different people deal with their trauma and its effects can vary greatly. Therefore, to help guide people through the process, it\u2019s important to recognize different types of trauma and their lasting impact on individuals and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Types of trauma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hear the word &#8220;trauma,&#8221; you may think of it as one concept with one set of effects \u2014 however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/what_are_the_3_types_of_trauma\/article.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are different types of trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each with its own unique impact. Likewise, various situations, environments, and life events can cause trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common causes of trauma include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in a natural disaster;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surviving an illness or injury;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with chronic physical pain;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing or witnessing violence or assault;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going through a traumatic event, like an assault or abuse;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living through discrimination, racism, or other systemic oppression.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traumatic experiences such as these can affect a person long after the actual event transpired.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Acute trauma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute trauma is defined as a single, often isolated event that causes severe emotional distress.
