Swimming is a great way to cool off and relax. Unfortunately, water is also a great vector for illness. That\u2019s why pool water is often chlorinated \u2014 to kill germs before they have the chance to cause a problem. But even chlorine doesn\u2019t solve everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked to dermatologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypsoriasisteam.com\/writers\/615cad5bd9e5c87398f1d6aa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Anna Chacon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and emergency medicine specialist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcafloridahealthcare.com\/physicians\/profile\/Dr-Syed-S-Ahmad-MD\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Syed Ahmad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of Miami, and Chicago-based family and preventive medicine physician <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/faculty-profiles\/az\/profile.html?xid=54675\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Chen Wang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how to avoid swimming-related health issues so you can enjoy the water in peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Swimmer\u2019s ear<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When water gets trapped in your ear, this moist environment can aid the growth of bacteria, which can cause a common ear infection known as swimmer\u2019s ear. Lingering water left after a swim is the perfect breeding ground for all sorts of germs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/swimmers-ear\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351682\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimmer\u2019s ear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an outer ear infection, from swimming in any body of water, but it\u2019s most commonly caused by bacteria that naturally lives in open water.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, there are some pretty simple ways to reduce your risk for swimmer\u2019s ear:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thoroughly dry your ears after swimming. Chacon recommends using a towel, tilting your head to drain water and even holding a hair dryer at the lowest setting at arm\u2019s length from your ear.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid swimming in water that has a lot of bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/swimming\/oceans-lakes-rivers\/visiting-oceans-lakes-rivers.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of signs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that might indicate unsafe water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat your ears with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/2\/drug-60876\/burrows-otic-ear\/details\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burow\u2019s solution prophylactic ear drops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which contain acetic acid to combat bacteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience hearing changes, a fever or pain, redness or swelling in your ear or nearby lymph nodes, you might have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/swimmers-ear\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimmer\u2019s ear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Visit your primary care provider or urgent care for treatment, which usually involves a round of antibiotic ear drops. You might also need anti-inflammatory ear drops and painkillers. If your symptoms are severe or you have recurring swimmer\u2019s ear, you might have to see an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Diarrhea\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swallowing contaminated water while you\u2019re swimming can lead to a bad case of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/swimming\/swimmers\/rwi\/diarrheal-illness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether you\u2019re at a lake or a city pool. Water is a great breeding ground for diarrhea-causing bacteria, like norovirus, E. coli and cryptosporidium, and chlorine doesn\u2019t immediately kill these germs. They can survive in chlorinated water for up to several days. Even small amounts of fecal matter containing these germs can wash off a person\u2019s body when they get into the water. Additionally, people who are already sick may have an accident in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take simple measures to prevent yourself and others from getting sick with diarrhea. \u201cAvoid swimming if you already have diarrhea,\u201d says Wang. \u201cDon\u2019t swallow water while swimming; change children\u2019s diapers frequently, so they don\u2019t contaminate the water; and take bathroom breaks. You should also rinse off with a quick shower before getting into the water to get rid of dirt and bacteria from your body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you come down with diarrhea post-swim, your symptoms should only last a couple of days. Wang recommends treating the symptoms at home with fluids and rest. If you see blood or mucus in the diarrhea or if your symptoms last longer than a day or two, you should go to urgent care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Athlete\u2019s foot<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can contract <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22139-athletes-foot-tinea-pedis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">athlete\u2019s foot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pesky fungal infection, in places like your pool\u2019s locker room. \u201cAthlete\u2019s foot spreads in moist communal areas,\u201d says Chacon. Locker rooms are humid and warm, making them the perfect place for these fungi to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of athlete\u2019s foot include a rash on your feet, cracked and peeling skin, and itching or burning sensations. It spreads easily, so take precautions to avoid spreading it to loved ones. Avoid sharing shoes and socks, wear shoes in shared areas and wash your sheets frequently to avoid spreading the infection to your partner or to other parts of your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chacon suggests wearing flip-flops or shower shoes in communal areas and paying special attention to the spaces between your toes when you dry your feet after swimming. It\u2019s also not a great idea to wear wet socks or shoes, she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/athletes-foot\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20353847\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat athlete\u2019s foot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with over-the-counter antifungal creams and ointments from your local pharmacy. Recurrent or severe cases that don\u2019t improve with over-the-counter remedies warrant a trip to your primary care provider or dermatologist for prescription-strength treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Skin irritation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with sensitive skin know that the simplest things can trigger a rash or other reaction. Sometimes, this includes swimming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few common causes of skin irritation include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reaction to chlorine, salt or other elements in the water or plant life\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation from tiny parasites that usually infect birds, which is also called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/swimmersitch\/faqs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimmer\u2019s itch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can affect the parts of your skin that aren\u2019t covered by your bathing suit\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashes from jellyfish and sea anemone larvae, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1017216\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seabather&#8217;s eruption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which affects the parts of your skin that are covered by your bathing suit\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMild rashes after swimming can be treated with antihistamines like Benadryl,\u201d says Ahmad. \u201cTopical creams like calamine lotion might also help. Severe rashes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid skin irritation, rinse off with clean fresh water right after swimming to get rid of chlorine and other irritants. If you have sensitive skin, wearing a rash guard while you swim may help prevent skin concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Yeast infection<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While swimming itself won\u2019t cause a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fungal\/diseases\/candidiasis\/genital\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yeast infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wearing a wet swimsuit for an extended period of time might. \u201cThat\u2019s because yeast naturally lives on the body,\u201d explains Wang. \u201cWarm, wet places on the body, like the vaginal area covered by a wet bathing suit, encourage yeast growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common yeast infection symptoms include vaginal itching or soreness, pain during sex or urination and abnormal discharges. You can try treating a yeast infection with an over-the-counter cream, which can vary in strength from one- to seven-day treatments. If symptoms persist, you should see your primary care provider, gynecologist or an urgent care provider who can prescribe a cream or oral medication to get rid of the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can usually avoid a yeast infection from swimming by taking off your wet bathing suit as soon as you\u2019re done. Change into dry, breathable fabrics that don\u2019t trap moisture.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Need a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
