It is caused by a breakdown in eye and brain communication that occurs between birth and age seven. The brain relies more on the stronger eye, further weakening the \u201clazy\u201d eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amblyopia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7739017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affects 2-3% of children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If doctors detect amblyopia early, it can often be entirely corrected. If not detected, it can permanently affect vision as children grow into adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some young people may lack confidence because of an amblyopia diagnosis \u2014 even though it is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/preventblindness.org\/common-childrens-vision-problems-prevalence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common cause of vision loss in children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This lack of self-esteem can cause problems in school, social withdrawal and unnecessarily risky behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a parent, you must speak with children about amblyopia and any other insecurities. Providing education on an amblyopia diagnosis is one way to help children replace fear with knowledge. Education can also teach parents how to properly support their child after an amblyopia diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is amblyopia (lazy eye)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/164512\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201clazy eye\u201d is not accurate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the problem has little to do with the eye itself. Instead, the problem lies in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/001014.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerve connectivity breakdowns between the eye and the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over time, the brain will ignore images sent by the weaker eye. If it receives different images from both eyes, it will prioritize the stronger eye\u2019s image over the weaker eye. This phenomenon allows amblyopia to grow worse if not immediately treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untreated amblyopia can lead to vision complications and severe visual disability in one or both eyes. Over time, it can also cause complete blindness. It\u2019s important to see a pediatric eye doctor if you suspect your child has amblyopia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of amblyopia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors can diagnose children and adults with more than one type of amblyopia. The type of amblyopia your child develops will depend on the way their vision is blocked or impaired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the cause, children can develop any of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Amblyopia-Types.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three types of amblyopia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strabismic amblyopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Develops when eyes are not parallel and do not receive the same image from the brain. One eye may tilt, flip or move the image in a different way than the other eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deprivation amblyopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Develops when cataracts or other items impair eyesight and \u201cdeprive\u201d children of clear vision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Refractive amblyopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Develops when eyes have different levels of refractive error, leading to different levels of overall focus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When eye doctors treat amblyopia with eye patching or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1172103\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atropine drops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can also cause reverse amblyopia. This rare condition can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19323646\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make amblyopia symptoms worse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or create new symptoms. Patients can often eliminate reverse amblyopia by properly treating the original condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes amblyopia in children?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amblyopia originates from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4701128\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different visual inputs in each eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can be caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/condition\/amblyopia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any factor that prevents the eye from focusing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From extensive research, eye doctors have compiled a list of factors that can cause amblyopia in children. It includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strabismus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Eye misalignment that affects which images are sent to each eye from the brain. Eyes with strabismus often look in different directions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anisometropia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A large difference in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/refractive-errors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refraction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between a child\u2019s eyes. It is one subtype of refractive amblyopia.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetic history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children with a history of amblyopia in the family can have an elevated risk of developing it themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eye injury or infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If untreated or improperly treated, some eye injuries or serious infections can cause amblyopia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deprivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Cataracts, droopy eyelids, or other growths can prevent light from hitting the eyes. The brain ignores the eye experiencing this lack of light, causing deprivation that can lead to amblyopia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Delays in child development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/caring-for-the-eyes-of-children-with-special-needs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or neurological conditions might experience a higher risk of developing amblyopia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rarer cases, medication and eye conditions like ptosis can also cause amblyopia. Given the number of possible causes of amblyopia, it\u2019s important for parents to understand its signs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs your child may have an amblyopia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents should look for different signs if they suspect their child might have amblyopia. These signs can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Squinting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Partially or completely closing one eye can help children focus their vision through a weaker eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Head tilting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Tilting their head to one side indicates that children are compensating for misaligned eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced vision<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children with amblyopia might complain about trouble seeing items, recognizing faces, or reading signs that are far away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Headaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Often accompanied by other symptoms, headaches can stem from visual irritation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Misaligned eyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Parents sometimes recognize unparallel eyes in their children, particularly when children attempt to make eye contact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inconsistent eye tracking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A child\u2019s eye movement might be slow or delayed when following a moving object.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children avoiding a certain task can also indicate amblyopia. For example, children might avoid reading because it strains their vision. They might also steer clear of activities like sports, riding a bike or drawing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The longer amblyopia goes without treatment, the more of a challenge it becomes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/eye-doctors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule a visit with an eye doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you suspect your children might have amblyopia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing amblyopia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing a treatment plan for amblyopia can take time. The first step is to find a pediatric eye doctor that you and your child trust. Your eye doctor will answer questions and let you and your child know what to expect during the diagnosis process. They will examine how your child reads and processes input at different distances. They will likely test each eye individually as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment options for children and teens with amblyopia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A treatment plan will shortly follow an amblyopia diagnosis. Your ophthalmologist will work with you and your child to develop and explain each treatment step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctors\/lazy-eye-on-baby\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amblyopia treatments available for babies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and children with amblyopia:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vision therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Exercising one or both eyes to improve a child\u2019s eye coordination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Glasses or contacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Making vision in both eyes parallel through contact lenses or eyeglasses. Specially made contacts or glasses help correct the disparity between a child\u2019s eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covering a child\u2019s better-performing eye with an adhesive patch. This strengthens the weaker eye as it is forced to provide all images to the brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Atropine eye drops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Using eye drops to deliberately blur vision in one eye. Like patching, this forces the weaker eye to compensate for the lack of vision from the stronger eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Surgery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Correcting uneven vision through a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctors\/surgery-for-lazy-eye\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simple corrective lazy eye surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An eye doctor will start with a small incision.
