Winter is the gift that keeps on giving. The cold, dry air isn\u2019t very kind or forgiving to our skin, especially those of us who have eczema, psoriasis, or other conditions that make us prone to dry skin\u2014but you don\u2019t have to suffer in silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being proactive about your skincare can help you avoid some of the discomfort winter weather causes and reduce troubling dry skin symptoms. We talked to a few dermatologists who shared their top tips for winter skincare!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Keep your skin moisturized<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being proactive about moisturizing your skin is one of the easiest ways to avoid uncomfortable dry skin in the winter. But you want to be sure you choose the right moisturizer. \u201cA combination of ingredients called &#8220;humectants,\u201d like hyaluronic acid, and &#8220;occlusives,\u201d like petrolatum jelly, often work the best,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctor\/annie-liu-md-427237\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annie Liu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified dermatologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/practice\/california-skin-institute-2283\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Skin Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people moisturize once in the morning, which is great. But Dr. Liu recommends moisturizing twice a day!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Protect your skin from irritants<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you aren\u2019t busy smoothing moisturizers on your skin, you should be protecting it from irritants. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid really hot water or using moisturizers and products that contain perfumes,\u201d urges <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/doctor\/sandra-diaz-odonnell-pa-c-381915\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandra Diaz O\u2019Donnell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a certified physician assistant practicing dermatology at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/practice\/california-skin-institute-2283\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Skin Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Pasadena. \u201cPeople tend to take hotter showers and baths in the winter, which tends to dry out the skin and cause more itching and flare outs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take fewer and shorter showers,\u201d recommends Debra Luftman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/practice\/california-skin-institute-2283\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Skin Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Beverly Hills. \u201cUse lukewarm water, and apply moisturizers right after bathing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Liu agrees, adding \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you should also avoid any irritating exposures, such as dishwashing without gloves or using harsh soaps that leave your hands with that &#8220;dry &amp; gritty&#8221; feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Use a humidifier<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter itch and eczema are very common during the winter months due to less moisture and forced heat,\u201d shares Dr. Luftman. One way you can combat the dry air is by getting a humidifier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A humidifier turns water into a fine mist to add moisture to the air so it isn\u2019t as dry. It\u2019s especially helpful in the winter time when the cold weather and indoor heating tend to dry air out. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/common-cold\/in-depth\/humidifiers\/art-20048021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humidifiers can also help with snoring, congestion, and dry sinuses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/book.zocdoc.com\/get-started\/dermatologists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Visit a dermatologist<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you do if you\u2019ve tried several home remedies and your dry, cracked skin isn\u2019t getting any better? Visit a dermatologist! They can examine your skin to determine the root cause of your discomfort, because sometimes your skin needs a little more help to heal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your winter skin is from a condition like eczema, psoriasis, or chilblains, a dermatologist can diagnose and recommend an appropriate treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDermatologists spend at least 8 years in medical training to specialize in skin treatments, so [visiting one] is ideal if you can take advantage of that,\u201d Dr. Liu urges. \u201cMany skin rashes can&#8217;t be resolved with remedies, but a simple prescription-level treatment can usually recover your skin quickly!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, you don\u2019t have to resign yourself to dry, cracked skin this winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article was developed in partnership with the provider group highlighted herein.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chapped lips, dry skin, and eczema flares?
