I truly can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Pariana Tung, DDS, and her Signature Smiles Dentistry team. With flying colors, Dr. Tung and her team check-off on all of the keywords/phrases that one looks for when searching for a new medical doctor/team: Highly professional; exceptionally skilled; extremely compassionate, friendly, and patient; thorough and precise, with a keen attention to detail; incredibly attentive to the patient’s needs and inquiries; pain free treatment; etc.
While it should be clear that I think Dr. Tung would be a great dentist for anyone looking for a new dentist, I’ll get a little personal in my review to clarify why Dr. Tung is likely the right dentist for you if you’re like me and are avoiding/[avoided] the dentist for [much] longer than one ought to:
I infrequently write reviews of any kind; and even rarer include personal notes, but I know that for some, visiting the dentist is akin to visiting Dante’s ninth circle of Hell. Prior to seeing Dr. Tung, I had not visited a dentist in roughly 10 years, and had not received any type of preventative dental care in roughly 15 years. Throughout those years, I actively avoided dentists, willfully ignoring and neglecting multiple dental issues as they presented themselves, all of which I knew would become progressively worse over time. Over time, I consciously began to hide my smile and subconsciously began eating using one side. Towards the latter years, as my dental issues piled up, in lieu of it being mostly due to both laziness and being a poor, [then and] post-undergraduate/post-graduate student as my primary reasons for avoiding the dentist, it became anxiousness, predominantly stemming from an anticipatory self-conscious feeling of embarrassment. Eventually, push came to shove, and after allowing a particularly large, visible cavity in an upper front tooth to develop to the point where I feared a crowning/root canal procedure, or worse, a tooth extraction/dental implant procedure, was in my future, I finally mustered up the courage and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Tung after reading many positive patient reviews (thanks!).
My experience with Dr. Tung and her team was fabulous from the get-go. I initially scheduled an appointment through Zocdocs (Dr. Tung’s practice is the one listed in Falls Church, VA) a few days prior. Minutes after completing the online appointment scheduling process, I received a friendly call from the Dr. Tung’s office, confirming an inquiry that I had made on the application and going over what my expectations were for the first appointment (which were to address or initially develop a treatment plan to address the large cavity in question, receive a treatment plan to address my other dental needs, and to eventually begin a normal preventative treatment cycle).
When I arrived for the appointment, I was warmly greeted by Karina, who I would soon learn handles much more than receptionist duties, and by Dr. Tung moments later. I was the first appointment of the day, so when I accidentally tried to enter the office through the back exit, Karina kindly walked me through the building to the front waiting area, which allowed me an impromptu opportunity to scope out the entire practice. The office space itself has a welcoming, very contemporary feel to it. Both the reception area and the medical offices feel [and smell] fresh, and they’re spacious and brightly lit, and the practice itself, as some other reviewers have noted, sports some pretty spiffy, state-of-the-art medical equipment.
After an initial conversation regarding my expectations for the appointment with Dr. Tung, she and Karina took photographs and x-rays, which allowed them to quickly, yet thoroughly, develop a treatment plan, going over the potential needs of each individual tooth (heh, just FYI, if you’re curious, it’s ‘buccal’, not ‘buckle’). Unsurprising to me, my dental needs were plentiful, and I was presented with a treatment plan by Dr. Tung in layman’s terms. Karina, who had already spoken with my dental insurance provider, quickly provided me with an estimate, and included both what my dental insurance company would cover and what I would be responsible for paying for the day’s scheduled treatment (and what would be future treatments).
To prevent this review from becoming even wordier, I won’t go over my entire plethora of dental treatment needs, but I can tell you that the large filling process of the front cavity noted above was painless and exceptionally well done. It was obvious from the start of the entire treatment process that Dr. Tung and her friendly dental hygienist definitely go the extra mile, being very thorough, taking the precise route and checking things twice, thrice, etc., and making sure everything looks great and works mechanically. The filling noted above looks perfect (along with the other ones), and one would need to come up at close range with a magnifying glass to notice that it’s there. It’ll take me a while not to self-consciously hide me teeth when I smile.
Before, throughout, and after the procedure, Dr. Tung and her team were caring and friendly; the very opposite of the stereotypical standoffish, just the facts ma’am, doctor most of us have run into at some point in time. I knew coming in that I had an embarrassingly high number of dental issues, but the environment is so welcoming that I never once came close to going to my go-to defense mechanism of self-deprecating humor that I sometimes exhibit when placed in awkward/embarrassing situations.
So in conclusion, if you’re looking for a dentist, book an appointment now with Dr. Tung and her team, before [I think] she quickly becomes popular to the point that she will be unable to accept new patients. Part of me wishes I had addressed my dental needs years ago, but then I probably wouldn’t have been lucky enough to hit the jackpot with Dr. Tung.
