Qualifications and Experience
Gregory Burgoyne is a General Surgeon and the Assistant Residency Program Director for the surgical residency at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He instructs surgical residents and helps manage the residency program. He is also the Director of Surgical Research at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at SABA University. Dr Burgoyne specializes in open surgical procedures as well as laparoscopic procedures on the abdomen including gallbladder, colon, hernias, appendix and intestine. He also performs endoscopy of both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. He directs research in general surgery and presents this research at both national and local research meetings. In addition to being a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), he also belongs to the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). Dr Burgoyne is Board Certified in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He has also completed the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) Courses. He speaks English and Afrikaans. Dr Burgoyne earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town Medical School in Cape Town, South Africa. He completed his training in Cape Town and thereafter was an ER/Trauma doctor before beginning his surgical training in the USA. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.
