Lawrence and the other staff were all professional and easy-going, happy to answer my questions and concerns. It was my first time seeing an optometrist in a long time, but any anxiety I had about having my eyes examined were gone after talking to Lawrence for a short while. Furthermore, Lawrence was very relatable and apt at explaining my prescription and eye health. Overall, nice people and nice work!
Real charming guy. Very nice office and all the latest technology.
I first went to Dr Phillips' office at his "then-JFK-St." place 20 years ago and loved him. I had the same great experience at his Brattle St. office. He is now located at 1077 Mass Ave. The store is airy and gorgeous. Large assortment of frames. The people who work there are very competent, friendly and obviously happy working for him. Dr Phillips used a brand new technology to see the back of my eyes without dilating my pupil (which I used to really dislike). He showed me the 3D image on his computer... Fascinating ! I would highly recommend him, and his staff, to anyone looking for the best eye care.
Dr. Phillips was great! He knew what questions to ask and he told me what problems he thought I was having before I even had a chance to explain them. I felt that my exam was thorough and he explained what he was doing and why so I left feeling much more educated about my eyes and general health overall. I've been wearing the same type of contacts (biweeklies) for over 10 years and he had me a try on a new kind and I feel like a whole new world was exposed. I will most definitely be a regular patient. Also, great extensive selection of eyewear in the office. All the staff was super welcoming and friendly as well.
Was welcomed and processed as a new patient very quickly. The front desk staff and the doctor made sure I was aware that my insurance didn't cover contact lens fitting appointments. I thought it was a very nice gesture, because it's not cheap and no one wants that surprise at the end of a visit. Dr. Phillips was very professional and friendly. He was extremely thorough in examining my eyes and fitting me for new contacts (never had them before). He even picked up on the fact that I struggle with both nearsightedness and farsightedness. He worked through the examination until he found a prescription that made me comfortable at a computer and outdoors, driving, etc. After Dr. Phillips examined my eyes, he put some contact lenses in my eyes to test. He advised that they would feel a little weird for the first few days and not to worry, but they should never be painful or uncomfortable. He had one of his staff (I don't recall her name, but she was great) show me how to take them in and out, which was very helpful. He sent me home with 10 pairs of dailies, a bottle of solution, and a bottle of drops and told me to come back in a week so he could make sure he had the Rx just right before finalizing. Great experience -- I highly recommend this practice!
Dr. Phillips is highly skilled and empathetic. He takes the time to perfect the measurements to enable him to create the most effective progressive lenses I have ever had the pleasure of wearing. His attention to detail is evident in the highest quality of every part of his practice. Lyn is able to instinctively find the frames that complement your look exactly. Every person you encounter is helpful, professional, and warmly welcoming. Clean, modern, stylish optical shop with a high end selection in exquisite taste. High tech equipment for quick, accurate, vision diagnostics. Dr. Phillips is the person I entrust with my vision care for his demonstrated excellence.
Previous doctors either did not address concerns I had about my eyes (they feel dry and tired often) or they gave vague responses about how to treat or fix those issues. At Lawrence Phillips's office I received thorough answers to my issues and my changing prescription. He also showed me photos of my retinas which was pretty neat. Any doctor who takes the time to educate his/her patients is a keeper. So for those reasons I highly recommend this office.
Years ago, Dr. Phillips persisted in correcting my wife's diplopia, after MEEI and New England College of Optometry gave up. He persisted with my glaucoma/cataract degenerative side effects and improved my vision significantly. We need more like him.
4 years now and still sharp!
- refused to provide information regarding fees for appointments before appointment. -Kept me waiting for about 10 minutes (this was a lunch break appointment so I was already pressed for time - and they knew that). - Told me I would have to pay an outrageously large sum of money for a contact lens exam, when I was halfway through the regular eye exam already. And pressured me several times to pay it until I finally came right out and said " I don't have enough money to pay you for it" in front of everybody in the lobby. Rude! - Proceeded to put an authorization in with my insurance company, for the contact lens exam even though they never did one, so that when I went to book a contact lens exam with another provider who was much more reasonably priced, I could not make the appointment. I needed new contact lenses for tomorrow and planned this appointment a week ago, which is plenty of time for us to have figured out that I couldn't afford their prices, if they had communicated with me properly, which they didn't. I could have scheduled and gotten this done with another provider, and now I can't. Thanks a lot! Update: 10 months later and they still have not rescinded their authorization claim to my insurance company for the purchase of glasses/contacts, which is FRAUD, since I never purchased anything from them.
Everyone in the office was very helpful and polite. Dr. Lawrence was very thorough, genuine, and knowledgeable. Thank you!
Dr. Phillips' office was very convenient and clean. The staff was so helpful with pointing out what was/wasn't covered by my insurance. I hardly had to wait at all to see the doctor and felt I got a very thorough exam. Very pleased!
Walked in as a new patient, and it felt really easy and simple with the front desk. I was seen pretty much right away, and Dr. Phillips gave me new glasses prescriptions and contacts that felt much more comfortable. He was also really kind and sweet, I didn't feel rushed, and overall I had a pleasant appointment.
Efficient and knows what he's talking about. - little pricey but worth it if you want a knowledgeable professional
Best eye doctor I have ever had. I visit him once a year. The office staff is so friendly. Dr. Phillips beside manner is outstanding. They treat me like an old friend and I truly feel like they care about my health and appreciate my business.
Dr. Phillips was very friendly and thorough in his explanations and recommendations. I had a great experience and will definitely be going back!
I love Dr. Phillips -- he takes the time to explain why certain procedures are done and what the results show, which makes me more comfortable with recommendations he makes. The entire office is very kind as well and are incredibly knowledgeable about both the products (glasses, etc.) AND my insurance!
Seems like a smart guy
Overrated expensive - unexpected service added. Like a hairsalon that adds in unexpected treatment on your bill without asking. Clearly a money making factory.
He's great. Relaxed and knowledgeable, especially about contacts.
I scheduled my appt because my vision has improved (due to eye exercises) and I needed to update the prescriptions for both distance & computer. The exam confirmed my vision is clearer, but Dr Philips seemed to ignore that this is a GOOD THING, and the steps I’ve been taking are definitely working. He seemed to reprimand me for not wearing glasses at the computer - but the obvious reason is that my current glasses are TOO STRONG so I've had no choice (again disregarding any vision improvement). He was also very negative in regards to my age saying things like “at your age (this or that happens)”, again completely disregarding the fact that MY VISION HAS IMPROVED (does he really think my vision can’t improve more??). It was as if his mind blocked out any validity of vision improvement, so it was very frustrating communicating with him. Dr Philips was nice enough but due to his denseness and limited thinking, I'm not sure if I'll see him again.
Dr. Phillips is always at the forefront of his field, he keeps up to date with the latest developments and not only tells his patients what they should do in the best interest of their vision, but also explains WHY. Given that eyecare, like all US healthcare is not easy on the wallet this is an important thing for me to know and having the reassurance that I am not paying for something unnecessary is good and even though the decision is mine in the end, knowledge makes it easier to come to the conclusion that is right for me (even if it hurts my wallet).
Dr. Phillips is unlike any eye doctor I've ever seen. He spent, and continues to spend so much time with me to ensure my prescription is 100% accurate.
I went in assuming my insurance would cover the visit - he is in my network - only to find that this is only partially true. Thanks to insurance my bill was much less than it would have been, but it vastly exceeded my presumed copay. The service I received was stellar, and I would recommend this practice - but I do wish I had been told what to expect when I explained that this was my first time using vision insurance.
Dr. Phillips listened to my concerns and did some extensive tests before coming to any conclusions. He is very patient and took the time to answer descriptively and not just in medical terms which sometimes is hard to follow for most of us until we look it up.
Dr. Phillips is very friendly and efficient. He is also enthusiastic about eye health and explaining all the details involved. In addition, this practice seems to be very much up to date with the latest eye care technology. It had been years since my eyes were last examined and Dr. Lawrence put a lot of energy and care into my rather dire case despite it being at the tail end of a long day. Best eye doctor I've ever been to.
Office staff were friendly and patient. Dr. Phillips was amiable, efficient, straightforward and took time to explain the thinking behind his assessments. I appreciated his candor and caring attitude. There were a few interruptions to my appointment -- Dr. Phillips took a phone call and also stepped out to check on something unrelated to my appointment.
I was referred by a co worker to Brattle Square Optical, and I have to say they were excellent. Super friendly and professional, very informative, and I got my glasses same day! (I think I waited like 30-40mins). I would highly recommend and I will recommend friends and co workers to come here.
Very thorough, calm demeanor, explained everything well. I appreciated his recommendations and helpfulness of everything.
I have been going to dr. Phillips for over 10 years for my eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses . I think he's the best at his craft and I always feel like my eyes receive quality care . He s andexperienced OD, with a personable and seasoned stafff.
Very friendly. Efficient service, too, though what was covered with insurance was not explained.
The visit was very good, but I was charged much more than I expected for a contact fitting as part of the visit. I wish that this had been communicated to me previous to the appointment - I would have specified that I was only interested in a routine eye exam.
Wonderful visit. He made me lenses that day. Will be visiting again.
He is professional polite friendly He listens and is incredibly competent I have extensive experience with health care professionals and I highly recommend Dr. Phillips
Great place. I'm very happy to have Lawrence Phillips as my eye doctor.
Great office with friendly staff. Dr. Lawrence was knowledgeable and was quick. I was pleased that his modern process meant no pupil dilation! Overall, it was a great and efficient experience.
Dr : Phillips is Excellent, Front Desk not so much.
Excellent customer service!
Dr. Phillips was fantastic as always. Attentive, specific, professional, engaging. Overall a great experience.
Dr. Phillips was an abosolute pleasure to visit with. He was clearly very knowledgeable about his field but also very kind and engaging which is a nice change from the usual run of the mill Lens Crafters experience. The hand picked lens styles are magazine worthy and it was hard to chose between all of the beautiful options. I would definitely recommend Dr. Phillips and his staff to anyone looking for an above average eye experience!
Dr. Philips is very informative and took the time out to explain certain (accurate) things that he had noticed with my eyes. Very helpful insight; something that many of my previous optometrists had never mentioned let alone discussed variety of options.
Dr. Phillips was professional. His staff, on the other hand, is very rude, unclear about pricing and the tests that will be conducted and I would not recommend anyone to that office for all of these unpleasant reasons.
I'm a first time patient and came in for some mild eye trouble/annual exam. Dr. Phillips was friendly, reassuring, and informative. He made sure I understood my diagnosis and explained everything quickly and very clearly. Would highly recommend him!
exceptionally friendly staff. Very organized and helpful. I appreciated that they checked my insurance to see if I was covered. I found Dr.Phillips to be someone that I easily trust with my health and found his suggestions to be completely in line with my own self-care needs.
Dr Phillips was pretty awesome. He has a nice eye scan machine that avoided any need for dilating them pupils for a few extra bucks, which I felt was completely worth it. I still have to go back and pick out glasses, but that is also how un-pushy they were on making that sale.
Dr. Phillips is great!
This is my second visit to Dr. Phillips and I was happy to find that the great experience I had last time was repeated. Everyone in the office is kind and helpful, and most of all, very knowledgeable. I am so happy to have such a great practice near me!
Dr. Phillips was great at explaining everything. he is well mannered, polite and informative. Also, his staff is just as amazing as he is. Highly recommend this office and doctor.
Dr. Phillips and his team are phenomenal! I have followed them to two offices now. They always seem to remember who I am, what I'm up to, and what kind of styles I'm interested in. Dr. Phillips has a great sense of humor, an amazing "bedside" manner, and a way of convincing me to try new frames I never would've thought of. He always takes time to answer my questions and has taught me how important it is to take good care of your eyes, even if you don't need a vision aid. The turn around time on glasses is super quick and they have great hours. The office itself is gorgeous and their technology is state of the art. I couldn't be more impressed and thankful I found him and his team!
Been going to Dr. Lawrence for about four years now. Very professional, knows his stuff.
Dr. Phillips is professional, thorough, knowledgeable, and helpful. He will explain anything to you. He's a good doctor, and I will see him again.
I thought the doctor was nice but his office staff is so terrible to deal with I won't be going back. I came in for dry eye issues requesting a RX I previously used. After two appointments my contact brand was changed which was likey a good move for my overall eye health. However the symptoms didn't go away and when I called back to ask for my original Rx the woman at the front desk made it difficult to relay messages, talking over me, speaking to me out of irritation that I needed anything. I was trying to give them consise information and instead had to take the time to follow up multiple times. I don't have time to call give them my insurance info, pharm number, Rx name, my contact info, and the necessary pre authorizations it requires multiple times. They talk more than they listen and I'm fed up dealing when them so after I get my Rx I'm never going back.
Very nice doctor. He gave me a pair of contacts so I can try the glasses without having problems to check which one I like. They have a good selection of glasses and also they have an excellent machines to do the exam. I live far away and it was worth the trip there!!!
I've been seeing Dr. Phillips for many years, and I've always found him to be courteous, professional, and very observant. This visit was no exception. He and his staff did their best to make sure that I got the best eye checkup possible, and I'm very happy and will be sure to recommend him to others.
The doctor was really friendly, however, I was charged for a visual field testing for glaucoma without being informed that I would be charged. (My insurance doesn't cover this) I'm in my 20s and don't think this was necessary, especially without any prior knowledge that this test wasn't part of the normal annual exam. I am very disappointed. If you go, make sure you ask more questions than I did before the end of the exam!
I'd recommend him highly!
Great visit! I had never been to the eye doctor before, and Dr. Phillips was professional, personable and made me extremely comfortable and informed. The staff was friendly too - would highly recommend him!
He's really great. I brought my baby and he was very accommodating.
Dr. Phillips recommended progressive lenses on my first visit in 2013 and it was the right choice for me. It made a huge difference in reading, working on the computer and driving. The staff are very nice and helped me find the right styles for me. A year later, I had another check-up and the glasses are still perfect.
Dr. Phillips was very helpful. He even identified issues in my prescription from a previous eye appointment with a different doctor. He made sure I knew I could speak with him once I got new lenses to make sure they were working properly.
I went in for contact lenses for the first time at 55 years old. Walked an hour later in contact lenses. ????? Wow.
Dr. Phillips was awesome. He was personally friendly and very professional, his staff was helpful and personable. Not a huge fan of going to the eye doctor in general, but I could actually see myself looking forward to going to Dr. Phillips.
He was very thorough and noticed things that other eye doctors have not.
He's a good doctor, very helpful and efficient, as well as friendly.
The space is as wonderful as the visit to Dr. Phillips office. I have visited Dr. Phillips annually for 10 years and, although his location may change, the experience is always the same: quick, comfortable, fun, and informative. His staff, including his wife, always make me feel comfortable when I am waiting, browsing frames, or trying to understand the options available through my insurance. I would recommend (and have recommended) Dr. Phillips to anyone in the area seeking a optometrist. A couple additional notes: 1) since going to Dr. Phillips, I have not had my eyes dilated & 2) I waited 10 minutes because I was 20 minutes early for my appointment and during that time his staff and I were engaged in conversation.
Great! Staff was wonderful, too.
Dr. Phillips and his staff are fabulous. They are all competent and caring. I enjoy my yearly visit.
We love Brattle Square Optical! Dr. Phillips is very caring, and the staff takes the time to find the perfect pair to suit me and my daughter. They have a fantastic selection of frames.
Great OD. Highly recommended. Great staff.
Been seeing him for years and think he's great, very thorough.
Not just a great doctor, a very interesting and engaging person. I look forward to my trips to his office.
Excellent, knowledgable, helpful, and friendly staff all around.
The staff at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. The new office is really nice and spacious, and Dr. Phillips is very kind and listens carefully to any issues that you have. I took his advice and now my vision and overall eye health has improved compared to what it was last year!
a very good experience, helpful staff and professional advice. would not hesitate to recommend.
He was very friendly and so was the staff. They were also incredibly flexible with my busy schedule!
He was amazing and really took the time to get my prescription right. I felt really comfortable and he did a great job explaining what he was doing and why which I really appreciated. I will definitely be going back to him from now on! :)
Very pleasant, caring and thoughtful.
Dr. Phillips - or Lawrence, as he told me to call him - was absolutely fantastic. He was very thorough, patient, and wanted to know just about everything about my eyes. His bedside manner was not only professional but I felt very comfortable in his office. On top of that, his equally fantastic, energetic, and welcoming. From the second I walked into the office I felt at ease and even excited to be getting new glasses. They had many frame options and I even got my lenses cut in store all in one day. I highly recommend Dr. Phillips!
Wonderful! Sorry they're moving it must a major inconvenience.
I have been seing Dr Phillips for the past 10 years. He is also the optometrist for my daughter. I am greatful to know him. His years of experience brings confidence and trust in his practice. He is very patient and always try to respond to your needs. His choices of glasses are diverse and offers different range of prices. The picture of Mr Mandela in his office tells all about his humanist quality.
Great visit! Dr. Phillips' daughter helped me pick out frames which was nice since I have never had to buy glasses before.
As always, brilliant. I have been his patient for umpteen gajillion years. I moved to England 13 years ago and can see way cheaper docs on NHS. The UK being a nation with free health care, they sure the heck were a lot cheaper, but they weren't as good as he is. So when I fly back to Boston to see my family, I see him on the first business day. I'd rather pay good money for a good doctor than pinch pennies at the expense of my eyesight.
Dr. Phillips is great. He's timely, professional and still takes the time to ask you about your job. I also really like that encourages me to try different contact lenses – to make sure I really do have the best ones for my eyes (and he's great about following up to make sure they fit well and that your eyes are comfortable).
Great family guy with a lot if talent!
Just rough with my eyes
Great doctor, cool office and friendly/helpful reception team. Doc introduced himself on a first-name basis, and expressed concern while educating me on what he saw. However, just like every other doctor I've ever been to I was not seen at my appointment time (was seen 35 minutes late!). Not sure what it is about the healthcare profession, but time management continues to be a challenge across the board - would love to find an office that respected my time enough to manage theirs.
He figured out my prescription without looking at my glasses and it allowed him to identify that my glasses were overprescribed and I had to lower them (by a lot- 2.5 instead of 1.75). That was very helpful since my eyes had been quite strained in the past year since my new prescription that had astigmatism added. I didn't realize it was the over-correction that was causing the problem.
Not only was dr Phillips great and really cared about the healh of my vision, the others in the office were fantastic in helping me pick out a pair of new glasses!
Dr. Phillips was excellent, office staff was kind and helpful!
I love coming here. I have been a patient for about 5 years or more. It's a great family run business and Mrs. Phillips and daughters are amazing at picking out frames for you. I just let her tell me what to get now and I get that all done while waiting for appt. Very efficient and very personalized service. I highly recommend them, even though I kinda dread them getting busier from all the good reviews ;)
He is very professional thorough and ver nice besides. All the people in the office are friendly and helpful, especially in helping pick out frames.
Great doctor. Very professional. Went in for a later appointment (6:30 PM) and was grateful that I didn't have to go in the middle of the day!
As always, Dr. Phillips and his staff were professional and courteous. He was very thorough in his exam and took the time to answer all my questions.
This was the best eye doctor experience I've had. Dr. Phillips and his staff were knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful.
Dr. Phillips was great, and his staff was very friendly.
The doctor was very friendly and professional. The exam seemed thorough and he answered all my questions. He even took me out and helped me select frames for my glasses. Altogether, a much more pleasant experience than my old vision care place (also located in Harvard Square).
Efficient and quick, and I still felt like he took the time to explain everything I needed to understand in regards to my contacts. Make sure you have an open mind that he may want you to try a lens brand you aren't currently using ( - which you should be anyways...considering he's the professional, not you). I'm looking forward to my follow up fitting as well as hopefully getting glasses.
