Dr. Moushumi Shoma Datta, MD

Gynecologist, OB-GYN

Professional statement

Dr. Shoma Datta earned her BS in biology and her medical doctorate in an accelerated, 7-year program at the College of New Jersey and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. During her 4 years of medical school, she researched diabetic pregnancies resulting in publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Datta remained actively involved in her class and received an Alumni Association Award for Academic Achievement. During her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes, Dr. Datta developed a keen interest in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery; that is, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Such surgery utilizes small cameras and specialized instruments to operate within the abdomen, pelvis, and uterus, thus avoiding large incisions and allowing for fast recovery. She participated in research on newly developed gynecologic laparoscopic surgical techniques and presented this data nationally. Upon graduation from her residency program, she was named the Outstanding Laparoscopic Surgeon of her class by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and received the Resident Achievement Award in laparoscopic procedures from the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL). After residency, Dr. Datta continued her training in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery during a one-year AAGL fellowship program at Mount Sinai Medical Center under the supervision of laparoscopic pioneer, Dr. Farr Nezhat. During this time, she gained extensive operative experience in complex cases of uterine fibroids, endometriosis and other pelvic pathology. In addition, Dr. Datta also gained extensive training on the Da Vinci robotic surgery system.

This office's receptionist does not know how to take care of patients in her waiting room. She is very busy and it's almost as if patients are a secondary thought. There is a long check-in process and she speaks very quicklyand impersonally. I had no sense that my time or overall experience was valued. My doctor was knowledgeable and helpful but not warm or caring about my concerns. There were also moments when I felt judged about my choices.

A little brief, I thought in conducting the exam, and I was sad that she couldn't perform my surgery after searching once again for a doctor because she has to go on maternity leave. I got referred to someone else at a different location.

Dr. Datta is wonderful! I've been going to her for years at this point. She's kind and helpful and installing my IUD was barely painful because of how good she is. Everyone in the office is kind and good at their jobs, it's a very comforting environment.

Dr. Datta and her team were very attentive to my needs and respectful when listening to what I have to say. The office is clean and orderly and they keep the room temperature comfortable (unlike other offices that can be toocold). They utilize electronic solutions instead of having to fill out paperwork, and they were able to see me within 10 minutes of checking in. Highly recommend!

I've never wrote any bad review online. This is the first time I actually think I need to write something about it. And this is probably the worst experience I had ever have with doctor! Other than the receptionist is kindand caring, the doctor, the nurse, and the customer service who ever that was on the phone do not have caring/kindness in there dictionary. Three things about the doctor. First, I understand she's busy and needs to keep patients on their scheduled time. So that she's kind of rushing me. But as a doctor, you have to explain thoroughly about my symptom and what should I be aware of. If I don't ask, she won't tell me. Second, I wait in the lobby for about 15 minutes for her to send out my bill to the front desk because she's seeing her next patient. Excuse me?! Third, and it is the most important, during my visit, she said she will send out my prescription electronically to my Pharmacy store. Yet, SHE DID NOT! Also, they do all the reports and prescription electronically so I don't even know what my prescription is! After three days after my visit, I called the office and some lady answered my call and asked me about my information. Then she ask me what's the prescription name? You don't know how your system work? You've had all my information and you searched in your system and you still do not know my prescription name. But I suppose to know the name?! At the end of the call she asked me to call the office back within one hour to make sure they did their job. What an office.

Dr. Datta was pleasant and very informative about all my options and their associated symptoms or side effects. Unfortunately, the administrative team that serves her clinic is not responsive at all, and I was billed for tests that I was notmade aware of beforehand. It is impossible to get the administrative staff on the phone regarding an invoice or even an appointment. They are very unhelpful. I wish I could return to Dr. Datta, but her administrative team has turned me away.

in terms of carrying out procedures she was very professional and quick which was great. However one of my reasons for my visit (accidental unprotected sex) was met with a rather judgemental and condescending tone ("it only takes one time...")...her demeanor and tone of voice seemed to reflect an assumption that i do this regularly and i came away feeling that i'd been labelled reckless and or careless. As a result i felt less comfortable to come to her again.

Dr. Datta does not make me feel comfortable. She does not return phone calls. She does not follow up with diagnosis/treatment. The message service she uses is horrible. They have you on hold for 20 min then, then they hang upon you. I called several times and get the same thing. Very frustrated. I will not be going back to see her and NO I will not refer her to anyone!

I've gone to a bunch of OB-Gyns because the exams always hurt. Dr. Datta is the only doctor I've seen whose exams aren't painful for me. Her manner is a bit brusque and I get the sense that her time islimited, but it is totally worth it for the level of care she provides.

I have been a patient of Dr. Datta's for years. I followed her from her previous practice to this one. She has always been great at addressing any problems, questions or concerns. The office staff could do better with managing timeand expectations, but I find that as common with a lot of ob/gyn doctors.

Dr. Datta is clear and to the point. She's not super chatty and I didn't feel a close bond with her, but she answers all my questions and is clearly super competent when we've discussed birth control, general health concerns, etc.The practice is a bit of a mess (very scattered, can feel hard to get their attention) but I liked visiting Dr. Datta and saw her for many years.

The midtown office seemed like a good choice. Everyone was professional, it was clean. I was a new patient and it take a bit of time to fill our my paperwork however time ticked on, past my apt. time before Iwas brought to the exam room. Then I had to wait, freezing, in that tiny gown for an eternity. Not the best way to rest a new patient. The actual apt. felt cursory and routine. The followup and trying to refill my prescription was HORRIBLE. For 6 days in a row I called the office hoping to speak with someone as I couldn't login to the patient portal. I left many messages explaining the urgency of my situation (was leaving the country). I pleaded for someone to call back and leave me a message with a direct line so I could speak to a human. When I DID finally get someone on the line she took no responsibility and didn't try to help me but passed me along to someone else who wasn't sure why I had been patched through to her. Really unhelpful, inconsiderate and lazy staff. I won't be returning.

Made a same day appointment with no problems. Showed up 15 minutes early to complete the obligatory paperwork, then was left to wait for about 30 minutes. Once called, however, I went directly to the doctors office where she and Imet. It was nice to speak with her re: my concerns and expectations in the office rather than the exam room, undressed and uncomfortable where it is much more difficult to remember questions and request information. After that, I was moved to an exam room where I did the bulk of my waiting. However, unlike online reviews I had read prior to this visit, the office I was seen in was clean, sanitary, and professional. Waiting is a reality of the American medical system, and the wait times at this office were in no way excessive. Overall, Dr Datta and her staff were quick, professional, and efficient.

My doctor's visit was great. However, dealing with their billing department over the last 16 months has been less than satisfactory. Quick summary - I was overcharged for my visit. They charged my credit card anyway without me authorizing it.After getting my insurance company involved and later my bank, they said they would "waive it" but still no refund issued. I would recommend you carefully review any bills from this practice. It's not a reflection of the service whatsoever, but it has been a pain point for over a year.

I found that the office on 41st Street near 5th Avenue was very professional and efficient. Almost everything is done thru the computer which speeds up the paperwork process. You can fill out the forms before you even get to theoffice. I booked my appt. thru ZOCDOC and find that it makes my life much easier. They send reminders as well as the Doctors office which also called to confirm. They called me over the weekend to remind me of a Monday appt.

Dr. Datta was great. The clinic staff, however was less than professional. Medical assistants were whispering and complaining to one another while taking vitals. At one point, I was asked to stand up from the only chair in the room andwait while the medical assistant took another patient's blood pressure. The Doctor was great, but the medical facilities and other staff were lacking in professionalism.

The doctor was very nice. She was thorough and she has the right demeanor for her work. But I didn't like the front desk's confusion about my appointment time. They said their system was down. I also didn't like that theyneed your credit card on file and that they charge if you miss your appointment. There are other places that will not ask for a mode of payment upfront and penalize you if you miss an appointment. I also have bad veins and it usually takes an experienced and skillful phlebotomist to draw my blood and their assistant was unable to draw blood from me, so I had an incomplete check-up.

If the doctor comes to eat office 30 minutes late - I think it's professional and good manners to acknowledge the tardiness and apologize. She didn't. She also didn't refill my Perscription and had to follow up after a week. Justa fristrating experience after they couldn't find a vein when they drew blood so had to go back a second time for that as well.

I was not prepared at all for the in-office procedure of an IUD insertion that she performed and did not receive adequate post-procedure care. I was in the worst pain of my life after the procedure and she let me leavethe office (practically crawling on the floor with pain) without any pain killers. I was in so much pain 24-hours after the procedure that I nearly went to the emergency room.

Dr. Datta was pleasant, personable, and made my time "on the table" thorough but QUICK (which was much appreciated as she could tell I was anxious)! She answered all of my questions thoughtfully and told me exactly how to reach her/whattime frame I could expect if I had any follow-up questions. I feel cared for! I was in and out of the office within 45 minutes as a first-time patient for my annual exam. Medical assistant/desk staff was fine -- better than most doctor's offices I've been to but not the best I've ever encountered. They do have an iPad check-in and a patient portal to get results of exam and ask questions to the doctor, which is great. Highly recommended overall!
