Vanderbilt University is consistently ranked as one of the top academic institutions in the United States.

He has an active interest in translational pain research and his pastfunded research grant looks at new treatments based on potential mechanisms of neuropathic pain. Increased understanding of the complex interaction between different mechanisms that underlie neuropathic pain is “sorely” needed in order to develop effective new therapies for neuropathic disorders. The superficial dorsal horn (SDH) of the spinal cord is a key region in the neural system subserving nociception, the presumed site of “gating” mechanisms that regulate sensitivity to noxious stimuli, and therefore, is one of the key sites for studies aimed at developing new treatments for neuropathic pain. His research focuses on detailed anatomic studies of different markers of neuropathic pain in the SDH like morphine, cholecystokinin, neurokinin and neuropeptide Y in both normal and neuropathic rats and complex modeling of clinical human neuropathic pain. These experiments may reveal a new strategy for managing intractable neuropathic pain. His funded clinical research interests include therapies for opioid induced bowel dysfunction, correlation of autonomic dysfunction and spinal cord stimulation and the role of pain management techniques in the management of epidural scar tissue formation.

Dr. Sukdeb Datta is an Associate editor of the Pain Physician journal and on the editorial board of the Frontiers in Pain Pharmacology and Therapeutics journal. He has been an invited guest reviewer to journals such as Anesthesiology, Spine, Pain Practice, The Journal of Pain, Pain Medicine and Pain. He has been involved in the development of evidence based guidelines for management of spinal pain by the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Presently, Dr. Datta is intimately involved in the 2010 Guidelines development on the use of opioids by the American Society of Interventional Pain Physician.

Dr. Datta has constantly innovated and one of his articles published in 2004 led to the development of an innovative technique of performing the lumbar sympathetic block named after him (the paradiscal extraforaminal technique of Datta and Pai). He has been invited as Grand Rounds speaker at premier institutes such Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital for Cancer in New York.

Dr. Datta is the most caring doctor. After years of chronic pain and seeing multiple doctors in different fields, he's the only doctor that understands what Im going through and is willing to help my condition considering thr circumstances that i am in. Not only is he very intelligent, but his credentials are extremely impressive. And after the first visit, not only was I extremely comfortable, but I walked out of there convinced that he can help me so I can love a normal life again! I can't thank you enough Dr. Datta!

I have seen many specialists for my problem. He saw something on my MRI none of the others did and gave me hope. He also spent real time with me, answering my questions, go over possible procedures and explaining his philosophy, limits and rules. It was an amazing first visit. I would recommend him to anyone.
