Unfortunately, today was more like seeing a "regular" Dr. Dr. Patel didn't remember that he'd taken X-rays of my left hand for basal joint thumb arthritis, and he seemed harried and rushed. It's not easy. I know that. I felt for him--I kept seeing the bubble over his head that must be there when I talk to parents at P-T Conferences: "I've told her all of this before! I don't have time for this less-than-critical patient. Why is she so freaked out about having thumb arthritis since 25% of women her age have it? Why is she so afraid of or doubting cortisone shots? I don't have time to have a long conversation with this patient--why is she back so soon?" All of this is conjecture on my part, but I think that's what I was getting. The Dr. had forgotten taking X-rays of my left hand for severe thumb arthritis--and I don't have a "ranking" for it, though I guess it's a level IV (highest?) at this point since I seem to have no cartilage left? Anyhow, he's a good Dr., but overwhelmed as they all are, and doesn't always have the time or attention to spend with each patient. At least not today. I feel like I'm my own Dr. again.(He prescribed a thumb splint, but I had come back 2x's this week because I wanted that specific prescription based on my internet research. Still, he's a vast improvement over the other hand surgeon I was seeing. He's fine, very very good--it's just the way medicine in practiced these days. It's the same for us teachers, having 165-170 kids on our rosters. We lose track. I have faith in Dr. Patel, and his office staff are excellent. Great overall experience.
