Overall well. Was there just under 2 hours by the time I saw the doctor and had some tests now so time could have been improved a bit. Great bedside manner though and nurses/receptionists were super personable, helpful and welcoming

The office is really nice and very high tech. The TVs in the room aren't that helpful because you can't see or here them during the cleaning. You enter your information directly to a lap top and the x-rays appear immediately on a computer. Perhaps they need a bit more practice with the x-rays. It took her almost 30 minutes to get them done. And the cleaning took longer than normal. When I finally saw Dr. Izhaky, she did not seem rushed. She made cosmetic suggestions which were very helpful.

Great energy. Warm, welcoming but quite focused on getting the job done! Awesome listener and paid extra attention to the details of my health journey. Shared insights and plans with me thoroughly, provided secondary plans if needed, and even suggested best ways to commute to make appts. Happy to have her as a part of my health care team.

Alice is incredible. She's really kind & explains things well, but that practice needs a lot of help. It really is a billing factory like the reviews say. I peed twice for urine analysis before just interpreting the results on my own & booking an appt at my gyno to treat a UTI. They kept calling me in to review results & instead of treating me had me pee again & now want me to go back in again??? It's insane! Also, a woman who works there (seems more senior) screamed at the front desk girls who were just trying to do their job and physically shoved them in front of me. Maria drew my blood, she was very calming & kind. I wish I knew the name of older (maybe 40s/50s?) woman who harassed the front desk girls & then demanded someone get her lunch. That woman has no place in an office environment. Won't be going back again. I never review but this place was so awful, I had to!

Sleep Apnea

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep apnea affects more than 18 million American adults. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by a person’s breathing being interrupted during sleep. With this condition, breathing repeatedly starts and stops. These interruptions can disturb your sleep and, in turn, impact your mental performance and overall health. If left untreated, sleep apnea is known to cause strokes, high blood pressure, weight gain, liver problems and heart disease. Since sleep apnea occurs while you’re asleep, it may only be detected by another person who notices your loud snoring; until then,  the most significant indicator may be your energy and productivity levels taking a plunge.

Two types of sleep apnea are:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea is a very common type, where there is a blockage in the air flowing to the lungs. This usually occurs when the nose or throat gets blocked due to the muscles relaxing.
  • With central sleep apnea, there is no blockage, but the brain fails to signal the muscles that control breathing.

Common questions and answers about sleep apnea

What are some of the common signs and symptoms of sleep apnea?

Are you always tired? If you answered yes, then you may have sleep apnea. Apart from this, other indicators of sleep apnea are:

What are the risk factors for sleep apnea?

  • Genetics and family history: Your facial and skeletal structure can increase your risk of getting sleep apnea, and your genes can also play a role in how you breathe while asleep.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle: Consumption of alcohol, smoking and obesity increase the risk of developing sleep apnea. However, unlike other risk factors, these patterns can be managed or changed.
  • Age: While sleep apnea can occur at any point in a person’s life, the risk increases with age.

How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

  • Medical history is collected: Symptoms, family history and risk factors are considered to help diagnose your condition.
  • Physical examination: The doctor checks for enlarged tonsils, narrow upper airway, jaw size, tongue size and more during the physical exam.
  • Sleep study: During sleep studies, the doctor monitors your body during a full night of sleep. Learn more about sleep studies from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Other methods: Other methods include tests such as blood tests to rule out the possibility of underlying conditions that can be associated with sleep apnea.

What are sleep apnea treatment options?

There are multiple treatment methods that a doctor can recommend depending on your individual needs.

  • Breathing device: This type of treatment method is most commonly recommended to sleep apnea patients. A “continuous positive airway pressure” device (CPAP) is a mask that fits over the nose and mouth and blows air into your air passage to keep it open while you sleep.
  • Oral appliance: Also known as a mouthpiece, this is a device you wear while you sleep, and it helps to keep the upper airway open.
  • Surgery: Surgery is generally recommended when you have severe obstructive sleep apnea, where a CPAP machine doesn’t work.
  • Other methods: Other treatments can include implants, orofacial therapy and healthy lifestyle changes.

What can you expect during a doctor’s visit for sleep apnea?

  • Your doctor may ask about your medical history, symptoms and lifestyle patterns.
  • Your doctor may want to conduct an overnight sleep study to ensure that you’re being diagnosed appropriately.
  • Physical exams may be conducted if your doctor deems necessary.
  • Your diagnosis and treatment plan will be explained to you.
  • Depending on your diagnosis, you may be prescribed specific equipment to help you with your sleep apnea.

What are some quick tips for my visit for sleep apnea?

  • Write down any questions and concerns beforehand, so you don’t forget them.
  • Be sure to discuss any medication you may already be on.
  • Feel free to discuss your treatment options.
  • Check to see if your insurance provider covers your doctor.
  • Make sure you understand everything about any medicine, machine or equipment prescribed to you.
