Getting to know Paul Kang

Hello! My name is Paul. I stepped into the world of counseling after completing my studies at Adler University in 2023, having started my academic journey with a passion for understanding human movement, earning a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at UIUC in 2019. Navigating life's ups and downs, with its twists and turns, is something we all face. It's never easy, and reaching out for help is one of the bravest steps you can take. I've always believed that it's a sign of incredible strength, not weakness. That first step into counseling can feel daunting, but I'm here to walk alongside you, creating a space where you can be your true self, without judgment, full of compassion and empathy. As a Korean American male, I've faced my own set of challenges and barriers, especially when it comes to mental health. I understand the hesitation, the second-guessing that comes from cultural expectations and societal pressures. That's why I'm dedicated to making our space together one of inclusivity and understanding for all identities and experiences. Whether you're dealing with the complexities of being a first-generation American, struggling with cultural identity, or simply trying to find your place between two worlds, I get it.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In our sessions, we'll focus on authenticity and building a genuine connection. It's about more than just talking; it's about understanding, accepting, and celebrating all the parts of who you are. I'm here to help you navigate your unique journey, finding balance and harmony in your dual heritage, and guiding you towards a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In working with clients, my process begins with an initial consultation to build rapport and understand each individual's unique background, including their cultural and personal experiences. We collaboratively set clear, flexible goals tailored to their needs, informed by both their cultural context and personal aspirations. My approach is relational and culturally sensitive, emphasizing the importance of the therapeutic relationship and understanding the nuances of each client's experiences, especially those navigating dual cultural identities. Sessions are interactive, incorporating various therapeutic techniques adapted to best support the client's journey. We regularly review progress, adapting our approach as necessary, with an ultimate aim of empowering clients to navigate their complexities, improve relationships, and live authentically. The process concludes with careful planning for the end of therapy, ensuring clients are equipped with strategies for continued growth.
