Getting to know Stephen Hirsch

I am a psychotherapist and work with adults and couples providing both short-term and long-term therapy. My practice is based on cognitive and relational theories, with a strengths-based approach geared to helping people reach their full potential in all life areas. I am a proponent of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and I am certified in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy by the Albert Ellis Institute. I am also a certified addiction counselor (CASAC) and have extensive agency experience with substance abuse issues. I also draw heavily from classical and existential philosophy, and other cultural influences including music and literature. I have experience working with individuals facing a wide range of issues, and I enjoy helping people improve their ability to cope with the challenges they face in an increasingly challenging world. I started my career as a journalist, inspired by the idea that I could make a living by talking to interesting people. I was fortunate to obtain an MBA from Columbia Business School, and went on to work as a finance and strategy executive at The New York Times Company for more than a decade. The experience I gained through this work informs my perspective as a therapist, and helps me understand the pressures of modern urban life that underlie so much of our stress and anxiety. My goal is to help my clients regain control of their own lives in every sense. I believe we can train our minds to be our best friends instead of our worst enemies, and that properly motivated, anybody can do anything. Please call us to schedule a complimentary consultation. We don't accept insurance but we may adjust our fees based on income level. We do provide sliding scale and packages.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I prioritize creating a safe and nonjudgemental space for you to openly share your thoughts and feelings. I will share noticeable patterns with you, piecing together aspects of your life and story to help increase your self-awareness. I offer you feedback and ways you could challenge your thought patterns.Over time, as you develop trust in me, you will come to better understand the root of distressing feelings and come to better understand yourself and your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I practice therapy based on cognitive and relational theories, with a strengths-based approach geared to helping people reach their full potential in all life areas. I employ elements of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy and structural family therapy, and I am certified in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy by the Albert Ellis Institute. I also draw heavily from classic and existential philosophy, and other cultural influences including music and literature.
