But ask a young person and they\u2019ll tell you they\u2019re eager to form relationships with their healthcare providers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are looking for someone we can relate to,\u201d says Amber Robins, a Washington, DC area 31-year-old. \u201cThe age gap can be hard, but if I feel comfortable talking with someone, I can connect with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to her status as a bona fide 30-something, Robins treats millennials in her work as a family medicine physician. She is also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recipient of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1hQbjPMPJNoe-aJ4xsJTtS0Qc0e68oOAARKBV47aCzCc\/edit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 Under 40 Leaders in Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> award from the National Minority Quality Forum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relating to millennials might come more easily to Robins than it does to her older peers. But with a little knowledge and a willingness to make a few adjustments, any practitioner can attract and retain younger patients. Here are data-driven insights to help you understand how digital natives approach healthcare. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials expect a digital-first experience<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all millennials (97 percent) use the internet, according to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/05\/02\/millennials-stand-out-for-their-technology-use-but-older-generations-also-embrace-digital-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 Pew report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What\u2019s more, 28 percent of them are smartphone-only internet users. Whether buying new shoes, ordering a burrito or paying their portion of the rent, millennials are far more likely than Gen Xers or Baby Boomers to reach for their phones. They have similar expectations when it comes to booking doctor\u2019s appointments and getting lab results \u2014 that they should be able to do everything from their phones.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/form\/industries\/2015-state-connected-patient.jsp?nc=70130000000m6Gf&amp;d=70130000000m6Gu\">One poll<\/a> found that 71 percent of millennial patients want their providers to use apps for nearly all patient engagement, including appointment scheduling, sharing health information and generally managing care.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even intake forms traditionally filled out by hand before seeing the doctor seem like an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiquated waste of time to younger adults accustomed to e-forms and e-signatures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAllowing people to fill out patient forms electronically on their cell phones is typically something that millennials like,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premier-podiatry.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Velimir Petkov, DPM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Clifton, New Jersey-based podiatrist. \u201cThis way, they can take care of it at their convenience. Who wants to sit in a doctor&#8217;s office with a clipboard, pen and five or 10 pages worth of paperwork? As a bonus, using electronic check-in helps us minimize wait times and man-made errors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><em>Takeaway<\/em>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure your practice has online scheduling and patient portals with new patient forms, ideally optimized for mobile.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials rely on the internet for health information<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of millennials (58 percent) research health and nutrition information on Google, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visioncritical.com\/resources\/the-everything-guide-to-millennials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 report by Vision Critical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span>cloud-based customer intelligence software company<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coincidentally, that\u2019s the same percentage of millennials who reported trusting doctors in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ghgroup.com\/articles\/healthcare-millennials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted by Greyhealth Group and Kantar Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By comparison, 73 percent of older respondents affirmed their trust in the medical community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bit of proactive research, however, isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing. Though patients\u2019 diagnoses may not always be spot-on, <\/span>what they say about their findings<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can facilitate\u00a0<\/span>productive\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conversations. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials want to be heard,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharp.com\/san-diego-doctors\/dr-amber-ortega-87950\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amber Ortega, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharp Rees-Stealy San Carlos medical center in La Mesa, California. \u201cThey like having the opportunity to express themselves before the provider interrupts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing open-minded and giving millennial patients time to speak is something any provider can do to approach them,\u201d Ortega adds, \u201cdespite any age gaps that may be present or any other barriers the provider may perceive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><em>Takeaway<\/em>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen closely and without judgment to younger patients\u2019 ideas about their health. You\u2019ll establish trust and confirm that you have their best interests at heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials are loath to take time off from work<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite stereotypes suggesting young people aren\u2019t loyal or committed to their jobs, they are less likely to take off personal time than members of older generations. That\u2019s according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projecttimeoff.com\/press-releases\/new-survey-millennial-attitudes-making-americas-vacation-problem-worse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 report from Project: Time Off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a U.S. Travel Association initiative aimed at encouraging Americans to use their vacation days. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials, who report higher levels of job insecurity than older workers, are at least twice as likely to find taking time off difficult \u2014 because they fear losing out on a raise or promotion, they don\u2019t want to seem replaceable and they want to show complete job dedication, among other reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the report focuses on the millennial trend of skipping vacations because of job-related FOMO, the same mindset could make them reluctant to schedule weekday doctor\u2019s visits during office hours. For that reason, \u201coff-hours\u201d appointments \u2014 after work and on weekends \u2014 appeal to millennial patients, as do video appointments and other forms of telemedicine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMillennials are coming to our clinics in growing numbers,\u201d says chiropractor <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christomshack.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Tomshack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO and founder of HealthSource holistic health clinics. \u201cWe have responded by being more convenient with appointment options during lunch, early morning and late evening to accommodate their busy schedules.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><em>Takeaway<\/em>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider offering appointments outside of the usual 9-to-5, Monday through Friday slots. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials communicate via messaging<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In line with their preference for all things digital, most millennials prefer to send texts than talk on the phone. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openmarket.com\/press\/study-millennials-would-rather-text-than-talk-infographic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 500 millennials, 75 percent said they\u2019d rather give up their phone\u2019s call function than sacrifice texting. By way of explanation, 76 percent said they favor texting because it\u2019s more convenient and easier to squeeze into a packed schedule, while 63 percent deemed texting less disruptive than voice calls and 53 percent just generally liked shooting off emojis more than shouting \u201chello\u201d into a device. While HIPAA regulations and other restrictions may make communicating sensitive health information via SMS a nonstarter, secure patient portals and similar services allow for chats that work for both patients and practitioners. Timely responses will ingratiate you to younger patients who appreciate online accessibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI use a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">portal system that lets patients see lab results,\u201d Robins says. \u201cI use it to shoot off messages when lab results come back. And when patients have questions or concerns, they email me and I try to get back to them as soon as I can \u2014 usually that same day. I understand the importance to millennials of getting information quickly.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Takeaway<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Use secure messaging to communicate with your patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials are consumers of healthcare first, patients second<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials are discerning when it comes to how they spend their money, and that budget-conscious mentality comes through when they\u2019re booking healthcare appointments.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to Yelp, Facebook and the five-star rating systems featured on most transactional websites, user-generated reviews and rankings have become a huge component of millennials\u2019 search for new PCPs or specialists. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/five-ways-tech-savvy-millennials-alter-health-care-landscape-300054028.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 PNC Healthcare survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly half of millennials and Gen Xers use online reviews when shopping for healthcare providers, compared to 40 percent of Baby Boomers and 28 percent of seniors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practices benefit from garnering positive online reviews. These consumer voices can promote patient-oriented experiences, including ease of booking, short wait times, transparent pricing, and responsiveness before and after appointments.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMillennials like transparency when it comes to their healthcare,\u201d Petkov says. \u201cStaying in touch, answering their questions and developing an ongoing open and honest relationship is important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><em>Takeaway<\/em>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online reviews hold credibility, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thescript.zocdoc.com\/how-to-leverage-online-patient-reviews-to-grow-your-practice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage patients to rate your services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Millennials think about health holistically<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.aetna.com\/news-releases\/2013\/06\/who-is-the-healthiest-new-aetna-study-shows-that-millennials-genxers-and-baby-boomers-all-think-they-are-the-healthiest-generation\/\">A study from Aetna<\/a> found that\u00a0millennials were considerably more likely than older generations to define &#8220;health&#8221; in terms of diet and exercise, whereas Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers were more likely to equate health with not being sick, as well as getting recommended screenings and preventive care.
