This means that every minute, patients are telling us with their clicks what they want when it comes to their care. While some might think of patients as a monolith, we know that each search and each booking represents a different need, a different priority, a different desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Zocdoc, we have the privilege of receiving this feedback from patients each day. In 2023, patients showed that they are discerning when it comes to their care. They looked at an average of 26 provider options before booking. What characteristics mattered most? The following is a snapshot of the year\u2019s key trends and insights highlighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/about\/news\/zocdoc-launches-inaugural-what-patients-want-report\/\">what patients want<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Speed to care<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 1 in 3 appointments took place within 48 hours of booking and nearly half of all appointments on Zocdoc took place within 4 days, showing a strong preference for near-term appointments.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17896\" src=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1692\" height=\"1032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics.png 1692w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics-1024x625.png 1024w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics-768x468.png 768w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01.-Article_What-characteristics-1536x937.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1692px) 100vw, 1692px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preference for near-term bookings held true across all demographics. However:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Boomers and older saw a little less urgency for same-day visits relative to younger generations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men more strongly preferred near-term bookings, with 35% happening within 48 hours vs. 29% for women.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients in Houston, Dallas and New York were most likely to book appointments in the very near term.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas had a 25% higher share of within-a-day appointments than the average.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston saw a 21% higher share, while New York saw 8% higher.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients in Boston, Tampa and Philadelphia tended to book further out.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston patients booked 50% below the average share of appointments that happened within 24 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston\u2019s share of bookings for 8 or more days out was 49% higher than the average. Tampa was 46% higher, while Philadelphia was 31% higher.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Virtual vs. in-person care offerings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providers* who offered both virtual and in-person visits received 51% more bookings than those who offered in-person only and 217% more than virtual-only providers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17897\" src=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1692\" height=\"918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics.png 1692w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics-1024x556.png 1024w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics-768x417.png 768w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02.-Article_What-characteristics-1536x833.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1692px) 100vw, 1692px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Excluding mental health providers<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gender of provider<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Zocdoc\u2019s marketplace, 66% of participating providers identify as female and 34% identify as male, closely mirroring Zocdoc\u2019s patient user demographics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, America\u2019s general population of practicing physicians is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/physicians-by-gender\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly the inverse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where 38% are female and 62% male.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17898\" src=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1692\" height=\"1216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics.png 1692w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics-1024x736.png 1024w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics-768x552.png 768w, https:\/\/thescript.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03.-Article_What-characteristics-1536x1104.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1692px) 100vw, 1692px\" \/><\/span>Patients preferred providers of their own sex.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, 57% of bookings were made with female providers and 43% were made with male providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female providers received 65% of female patient bookings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male providers took on 59% of male patient bookings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as patients aged, all tended to prefer male providers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain specialists received more bookings on average if they were female than their male colleagues.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstetrician-gynecologists: 40% more bookings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroenterologists: 30% more<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiologists: 30% more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other specialists saw more bookings on average if they were male versus their female colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthopedic surgeons: 80% more bookings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urologists: 60% more\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear, nose and throat doctors: 60% more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notably, male mental health professionals received an average of 35% more bookings than female providers.
