Today was my first visit with Dr. Shamani and when you check in for the first time, the front staff takes your picture for the doctor. At first It was kind of weird, but once the front staff explained that she's better with faces and will remember you by that over your name, I thought it was kinda cool. Also the front staff are awesome and hilarious! So my one and oy negative: I had to wait about 1:10 to see her. That sucks, not going to argue there. Granted the first 20+ mins was having my insurance confirmed, etc etc but after that I was frustrated when my 12 pm appt turned into 1:10....that is until you meet her. Dr. Shamani is hilarious! Super comfortable to talk to about every thing under the sun re: OB-GYN. She won't judge you, and best of all, she thoroughly explains EVERY thing she's doing, why she's doing it, what she recommends, what the literature says about it, and will talk you through each and every concern orquestion. At first it's a little hard to understand her because of her accent, so if you're monolingual English speaker, then just be patient because what she has to say is validating, supportive and suer helpful. Like for an example she explained in such a simple way why I'm always getting UTIs or yeast infections. No other OBGYN doc has done that and I've been seeing them for 14+ years (I'm 32). I even admitted to her, after about 30 mins of being in the appt (yes my entire appt was like 45+ mins so completely worth the wait) that when I saw she spoke Farsi on the website, I hesitated a little. Okay before you go calling me racist, I explained to her my previous experience with other OGBYN docs (mainly female but of all ethnicities) where I have felt judged because of my sexual activity. I explained that stereotypes exist for a reason and given that she grew up in the Middle East, she might judge me based on my "lifestyle." (Btw, We judge all the time! I'm bisexual and polyamarous- I'm sure you have some judgements about that). Anyway so to that, Dr. Shamani replied oh definitely not! If anything go do/sleep/love/be whatever and whomever you want because we have only one life to live. She also said that beyond that, her number one concern for her is my safety which is why she went over 3 different types of birth control (and how they work), made sure I had a complete blood panel done to check on things outside of just STIs/HIV and even offered to refill a Rx that my PCP does for me! I mean the women is amazing. But I'm still not done. Finally she talked about how right now she has 50+ transgendered folks as patients because apparently, not that many doctors in SD want to take these folks, or for whatever reason refuse to do procedures/surgeries/etc so a patient can finally feel like their insides and outsides match. I mean for a Persian women who only moved to the United States 12 years ago, she's one kick ass doctor who believes in the dignity and rights of all humans. So any of you kink friendly, polyamarous, sex positive & LBGT folks who need an amazing OB-GYN doctor-Dr. Shamani is who you gotta see!!!
