Getting to know Amber Simmons
Growing up in an environment where the need for mental health support was prominent, I found myself learning ways to foster connections with those in need around me. Through this journey of self-discovery, I developed a passion and desire to help others, promote understanding, and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. I am inspired by hearing others’ stories and having the opportunity to plant seeds of hope and foster resilience. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from California State University, Stanislaus, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, which have equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support individuals on their mental health journeys.
What should a new client know about working with you?
When working with clients I am actively listening, at times reflecting what has been shared, asking open ended and clarifying questions as ways to validate and acknowledge client’s feelings in the moment. I sit with the client in those feelings by accessing empathy in lieu of actively “fixing.” As Brene Brown, an inspiring researcher and storyteller, once said “empathy drives connection and sympathy drives disconnection.”
What is your typical process for working with clients?
I am driven by a person centered approach which means I start by meeting the client where they are at. From the first session I am actively listening and creating a safe space for clients to share their lived experiences. Through this process, I am able to demonstrate consistency in sessions while collaborating with clients on their healing journey. I also create a safe non-judgemental space that encourages open communication and feedback for myself throughout treatment. I strive in tailoring my treatment to meet my clients needs because they are in charge of their treatment.

Amber was the most amazing therapist. I hold her very near and dear to my heart and speak about her highly in my day to day life. She challenged me to think about all the different perspectives in situations and didn’t enable me. In the same breath, she made me feel comfortable and safe to share how I felt and validated what I was feeling in certain situations. She is the most amazing therapist! She is why I’m here today. I give Amber as many gold stars as you can give. I am a better person because of her!
