Getting to know Frederick Fearday
I am a licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 35 years of experience working primarily with adults. I received my Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1980. Since then, I have worked in an inpatient unit, a community mental health center, a university research and training center, and a Veterans Affairs hospital. My background also includes graduate teaching and clinical research. I believe it is imperative to develop a strong therapeutic relationship in which clients feel supported and safe as they seek to address their mental health challenges. I seek to understand a client's personal values, perspectives, and life story and how these influence their current situation. Importantly, I want to know a client's strengths and what motivates them for change to develop a plan of care responsive to each person's unique needs. I use a variety of clinical approaches informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I want to help clients identify specific goals to achieve in therapy and ensure they have a clear understanding of how we will work to achieve them. Throughout this process, I find it important to repeatedly review with clients whether therapy is meeting their needs.
I have been in the mental health field for over 50 years now. It has always felt like a natural fit for my impulse to help and connect with people. There remains a stigma about mental health that, while less than when I started, still acts as a barrier for people who often feel misunderstood. I have learned I can help by sincerely listening to their concerns so they feel heard. My work gives me great satisfaction, and I missed connecting with people and helping when I retired from full-time work. I am often inspired by the people I work with and the challenges they have overcome.
What should a new client know about working with you?
A non-judgmental attitude is essential to create a safe environment for clients to express themselves openly and I strive to create such a space in the therapy session. I use reflective listening to determine if I am understanding what the client intends to communicate. I will periodically ask them directly if I am meeting their needs and if I am missing something
What is your typical process for working with clients?
A strong therapeutic alliance requires that I understand the issues from the client's perspective. To do this, I seek to learn about the client's motivations, values, ethics, important relationships and culture. Clients often have strengths that they devalue and one of the task of therapy is to remind them of those strengths to build their confidence that they can achieve their goals. I want to gain agreement on the goals s of therapy and how we will work mutually to achieve them .
