About Dr. Joel Crockett

California Skin Institute – Medical Dermatologist and Technology Entrepreneur in the Bay Area Joel Crockett, MD is a board-certified dermatologist and technology entrepreneur specializing in medical, procedural and cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Crockett is a Bay Area native with a rich family tradition of medical service in the East Bay, beginning with his grandfather, Cless Crockett, who established his medical practice in Hayward in 1930. Cless had 3 sons, including Dr. Crockett’s father, all of whom pursued careers in medicine and settled in the East Bay. Dr. Crockett completed his undergraduate training at Brigham Young University, majoring in neuroscience, after which he attended St. Louis University School of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Crockett completed a dermatology residency at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. As a first year dermatology resident, Dr. Crockett conceptualized and led the development of Clearpath, an iPad application allowing residents to access pathology images via a touch enabled digital microscope. The application has been used by thousands of trainees worldwide and has been adopted by several dermatology programs as a core part of their curriculum. Shortly after completing his residency, Dr. Crockett organized a team of physicians and engineers to extend Clearpath to the clinical environment. This led to the creation of a digital pathology platform enabling dermatologists and dermatopathologists to diagnose skin biopsy specimens from a tablet device. The technology increased laboratory efficiency, facilitated greater collaboration among pathologists and led to the creation of a vast medical repository of digital images. Dr. Crockett is currently part of an effort to use those images in the development of machine learning algorithms to allow assisted and automated diagnosis in clinical pathology. Following his work on Clearpath, Dr. Crockett was hired as the VP of Product at CrossChx.

The office was clean, the supporting staff was friendly. I felt very rushed by the doctor. While I appreciate getting an appt. so quickly, I got about 2 min. of his time. The body scan was quick, not thorough. I tried to show him mole spots and he repeated "that's fine" without really looking. I spent much time on the iPad intake, but it was clear it wasn't reviewed. He almost ordered meds that would have upset my stomach, not having read that I have significant GI issues/history. He wasn't curious about the medicine I had been applying to the affected area. I had told the assistant that I had brought the medicine and products I had been using to show him. That was either not communicated and/or not considered. It was unclear if I needed to schedule a follow up or just use the prescriptions without one. There was no after visit summary to review. He was pleasant, but maybe his schedule doesn't allow adequate time per patient?

I wouldn’t recommend a visit with this doctor. When I walked in the doctor already thought he knew what I had, which was not even in the ball park. He didn’t even really look at my skin or let me explain what I had been experiencing. When he recommended medication, I wasn’t confident it was what is needed since he didn’t let me explain but I moved forward with it since I really needed a solution that worked for my skin. In the end it didn’t matter since the office sent the medication request to a pharmacy that was closed down and medication that required the doctor to send additional forms was cancelled as he never sent the required forms.
Incredibly rushed appointment (lasting only five minutes) during which Joel Crockett didn’t even sit down to discuss my condition. Very cold and robotic experience and I would not recommend if you’re looking for an invested MD for your healthcare.

I feel that it was quick and over. Dr. Crockett was in the room for about 3 minutes. I was used to Dr. Ju who looked everywhere on my body. Dr. Crockett just asks about my concerns. Skin cancer or lesions are not my area of expertise. Dr. Ju looked at my scalp, behind my ears, between my toes, and even between my butt checks. I just feel that the exam was not very thorough.

Doctor saw me for about 2 minutes. Didn’t spend much time and didn’t do a thorough look on my skin. Felt very rushed. Not a quality skincare review. Will not use this doctor again. I addressed my concern with the front desk. Felt very unwelcomed by the doctor. Like couldn’t get me out of his office quick enough.

The office is very nice and the nurses were quite nice as well. I met with Dr. Crockett and he was in my room for less than a minute. It just seemed very pointless to go through all the hassle just for the doctor to not even check the place where I am having issues, prescribe me stuff, and leave -- all under a minute. I could have done that for free online.
This was an introductory appointment and I will be going to see Dr. Crocket for a full body check and removal of some tags. I found the office staff very helpful and Dr. Crocket personable and interested in helping me.

Dr. Crockett was very helpful and knowledgable. My only reason for not giving 5 stars was that I felt a bit rushed and I didn't get any post-op care instructions after having a mole removed and several warts frozen.
I was absolutely impressed by Dr. Joel Crockett's professionalism, promtness, and empathy for my issues. The staff and nurses that I interacted with were also amazingly kind and caring. This is the second time I have used Zocdoc to find a dr. and I am so happy with both dr.'s and dr.'s office personnel. Zocdoc is a great way to find an amazing dr. and set up an appt. for a time that works well for the patient. The only thing I would change would be to have the questions about the Rx's the patient is on and the contact info. for the patients emergency contact, etc. available on-line, so the patient can fill out the info. from home and look up any numbers or other info. and complete the questions more accurately.
