About Dr. April Merritt

Dr. April A. Merritt is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Merritt practices general obstetrics and gynecology. Born and raised in Charleston, SC, Dr. Merritt is the daughter of a medical-surgical Registered Nurse and a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force. She recognized her passion for medicine and her drive to excel very early. This led her to the College of Charleston, where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry while conducting research in Organic Chemistry. She co-authored over 20 organic chemistry research papers and presented at many scientific meetings. Although she was offered the opportunity to continue her research and pursue a PhD, Dr. Merritt chose instead to pursue a clinical career. In 1998, she entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, earning her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004. During medical school, she conducted research on Helicobacter pylori and its action in the stomach. She also volunteered at a local pregnancy shelter for teenage girls and participated in school education programs on sexually transmitted diseases. While she always had a passion for women's health, it was her fourth-year medical school rotation on labor and delivery that ignited her dream of becoming an OB-GYN. With the full support of her husband, Dr. Merritt moved to Orlando, Florida, to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Orlando Regional Healthcare. She entered private practice in 2009 and is now a partner at Delaney OB/GYN. Dr. Merritt was named among the top 20 of Orlando's Best OB/GYNs by Babyourself Magazine.

I was a new patient, which means 1st impressions matter. My appointment was scheduled for 10:45 am. I arrived 15 min early per the office request. Waited in the waiting room for not that long but then brought back to the doctor's office, not an exam room, to sit by myself for 45 minutes. This means the doctor wanted to talk with me first, then the exam, but no one communicated anything except the doctor would be in soon. I said that I have to go to work and need to leave by 12 pm. It was 11:30 am and still no communication. Clearly, there is not enough time to chat and the doctor and do an exam before I have to go. I rescheduled. No one seemed to even care that I was there. Very weird vibe in the office. OH and their 80's music was way too loud!

Usually the dr listens to my chest. This wasn’t done. Music in hall was so loud-not relaxing. Waited for 35 mins naked on the table waiting for the dr. Usually it’s great experience. Not today.

Staff was very friends and office itself was nice and was clean. My low rating is primarily due to the wait times. I wasn’t seen until an hour past my morning appointment time, this was consistent to my previous experience during last years appointment. I work and to have to take another hour of unexpected time shouldn’t be the norm here. I want to go to a provider that values my time as much as I value theirs.

I'm deeply hurt and disappointed in the way I was treated by intake staff and the doctor concerning my stillbirth from a few years ago. The woman doing the intake was a midlde aged blonde lady, and she said the exact weeks and used the term "my baby" like I had forgotten when taking my information. I just wept and she did nothing but dryly say sorry. Then, to add insult to injury, the doctor came in and asked me if I had given birth before minutes after. Why didn't the intake woman take 2 seconds to say something? Shame on you!! I'll have to be on fire and dying to come back to this place again. I didn't get the woman's name, but I wish I did so I could contact her personally. I hope in the future you'll really care for women, and not treat them like cogs in an assembly line. The experience was dehumanizing and I'll never forget it.
