Why do I need a referral for some doctors but not others?

Some types of insurance and health plans will not pay for a visit unless you have a doctor’s referral when making an appointment. Zocdoc may ask for the name of your referring physician if we believe that one may be required by your insurance, but you should always confirm with your health plan to make sure that your visit will be covered. You can also include your Insurance Member ID when booking your appointment or use Zocdoc’s insurance card capture feature to help your doctor or medical provider know what insurance requirements may apply.
