About Dr. Jay Lieberman

Dr. Lieberman is professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the Director of the Institute of Orthopaedics at the Keck Medical Center of USC, and the President of USC Care. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Albany Medical College, completed an internship in General Surgery at Jacobi Medical Center, a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital, and a fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Lieberman is internationally recognized for his expertise in primary and revision total hip and knee replacement and the treatment of osteonecrosis (bone death) of the hip and knee. He is interested in improving outcomes after total hip and knee replacement and how pain management, aggressive physical therapy, and preventing deep vein blood clots affect the results of total joint replacement surgery. Dr. Lieberman also wants to assess the influence of spirituality on the results of total joint replacement.

All my problems and questions were addressed in a efficient and pleasant manner.
The doctor suggested something he wanted me to do with a cane, but I wasn't following his description. Later when discussing it with my spouse who was in there with and who explained it to me differently, I understood the logic. We felt the doctor explained it poorly, and was not concerned whether I understood it or not. Instead, the doctor simply said "You don't need to understand it, just trust me and do it". That was a stupid thing to say to me. I do not have to tolerate being treated in that manner. For me to do what he suggested, I needed to understand the mechanical logic behind it. The doctor should have been smart enough to understand why I didn't follow him. He may be a good doctor, but he has a bad and somewhat condescending bedside manner. I have no desire to return to him.
