What are the sex and gender options on Zocdoc?

Learn how to update your profile to accurately reflect your sex and gender and choose when to share this information.

Updated over 2 years ago

Zocdoc is committed to creating a safe experience for all patients. You can update the information in your profile to accurately reflect your sex and gender, and choose from a set of more inclusive options.

We understand that patients may not want to share the same information with every provider, so you can choose what sex and gender options to send to the practice each time you book.

When booking, you will be asked for your sex (as listed on your health insurance or medical record) to assist providers with insurance verification and patient record matching.

To add additional sex or gender information to your profile:

  1. Log in to zocdoc.com

  2. Select Settings > Profile > Add more sex and gender info

  3. Select any of the options that apply and save

  4. Every time you book, you can choose what you’d like to share with individual providers

Additional options include:

  • Assigned female at birth

  • Assigned male at birth

  • Cisgender: a person whose current gender corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth

  • Genderfluid: a person who does not identify with a fixed gender

  • Genderqueer: a person who does not follow binary gender norms

  • Intersex: a person born with traits, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs, hormone function, and/or chromosome patterns that may not fit the typical definition of male or female

  • Non-binary: umbrella term for a person whose gender identity lies outside the gender binary

  • Transgender man: a person whose gender is male and whose sex assigned at birth was female

  • Transgender woman: a person whose gender is female and whose sex assigned at birth was male

  • I’d prefer not to say

  • None of these apply to me

What sex and gender information is shared with providers?

Legal name, date of birth, and sex (as listed on health or insurance records) will always be passed to the provider to assist with insurance matching. If you would like to share any additional sex or gender information with a provider, you can do so each time you book. (This is optional.)
