About Dr. Robert Wiesen

Robert S. Wiesen earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. He completed his medical residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Manhattan. He then pursued a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he was elected chief fellow in recognition of his diagnostic and endoscopic skills. Dr. Wiesen has presented research abstracts on hepatitis and pruritus at international meetings and the National Institutes of Health. He has a special interest in therapeutic endoscopy, including endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration, ERCP with gallstone removal, colonic and esophageal stent placement, and endoscopic mucosal resection. He also performs upper endoscopy and screening colonoscopy with biopsy and polyp removal and has expertise in diagnosing and managing gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dr. Wiesen is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine.

Everything from start to finish was extremely professional. It was easy to self-schedule an appointment. Answering pre-visit questions including uploading new insurance was simple from my phone. Reception was very friendly and helpful checking me in. I was immediately brought back by the nurse who also was very kind. And Dr. Wiesen really took his time to review my issue. He asked me lots of questions and came up with a strong action plan including a good back-up plan. I also felt heard which was comforting and appreciated. I have also had great experiences with Dr. Unger in the past, so I would highly recommend their practice to others (and I have)!
Doctor was extremely dismissive of symptoms even though I told him I was referred after an ER visit. After telling him about the pain and weight loss I’d been experiencing, he prescribed me a PPI with no order for imaging claiming it was likely anxiety and that we’d see if I got better in a month. Keep in mind, this was after me telling him I’d lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. I felt that after I told him I was medicated for mental health reasons, he made up his mind as to what the cause was. Visit was pretty rushed. I went to a new GI as the pain got worse and he immediately scheduled an endoscopy noting my symptoms were abnormal. He found an ulcer and other damage to my esophagus and small intestine and took multiple biopsies (waiting on results). Also ordered an ultrasound to rule out anything serious. Giving him the benefit of the doubt as he may have been having a packed day, but this rushing and dismissiveness costs people hundreds of dollars.

Great doctor. It was my first time here today and he listened thoroughly and performed the appropriate tests as comfortably as possible. His treatment plan was extremely thorough and it was written down in a comprehensive manner. I would recommend to anyone needing a gastro specialist.

Appointment felt rushed but I think they were busy. Still felt rushed, considering I was concerned about my symptoms. I got tests prescribed to me to do at the hospital to see what the problem is, so my mission was definitely not a complete loss. But… Considering I had to wait to see the doctor for 45 minutes, I’d expect him to spend a bit longer speaking to me or being more thorough/more questioning. I don’t think he asked if I had any more questions either, I would have liked that because I actually had many questions. I have to be more assertive with these doctors, I guess. Which is truly a shame. Aside from that the receptionists were absolutely lovely, personable, and really seemed to care about the patients in my opinion.

Just saw Dr Wiesen today (Feb 2024) and had a great experience. I saw a few mixed reviews talking about the staff, but those must’ve been old reviews because the staff were very friendly and pleasant! even when communicating over the phone before the appointment. The doctor really took the time to listen, I didn’t feel rushed at all, which is so common these days with doctors. He was even open to all of the ideas and questions I brought after doing my own research (another common scenario where doctors make you feel like you don’t know anything, and they know best). I can’t comment yet on the actual treatment which is subjective for every patient anyway, but just know that you will be heard and cared for and that’s a big part of it in my opinion. ?
