About Dr. Helen Shum
Dr. Shum earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Brandeis University in Massachusetts while minoring in Anthropology and Biochemistry. After her undergraduate studies, she attended Drexel University College of Medicine in Pennsylvania where she received her Medical Degree. She completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at Brown University and went on to complete her fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center.
During her training, Dr. Shum has participated in basic science research at Cornell University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the New York Blood Center. She also co-authored several publications on various topics in clinical oncology. Since completing her training, Dr. Shum has treated patients with a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic disorders in Manhasset, New York. She is thrilled to be returning to Queens to continue to serve her community alongside other medical professionals at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists.

we got in to the office 5 minutes early while its a pouring rain day. we were soaked wet and feeling cold. Dr Shum offered hot blanks.

The Fresh Meadows office has a lab on-site and did all my blood work before a provider saw me which was very convenient. After blood work and triage, I waited for 45 minutes in the exam room for Dr. Shum. I was early for my 3pm appointment, Dr. Shum didn't come in until 4:20pm. I received no acknowledgement of the wait time. I described my symptoms and told her my repeated lab results over months and was told that "some people just naturally have this." It was disheartening because this has affected my quality of life for years. Overall, my time with Dr. Shum was less than 20 minutes.

Everyone was so nice starting from the front desk to the provider. The only person who I didn’t like was the PA. She came in and started asking questions and didn’t gave me a chance to answer. I was trying to show her which cancer he had so she can put it in the family history. Once I did, she assume he was dead and when I told her he is okay she was like oh he was lucky then. I felt she was not considerate and had a lack of professionalism. She answered texts right in front of me and said nothing. She seemed to be annoyed since the start. I did had to wait to see the provider but the nurse and the provider apologized. If it wasn’t for the PA this visit would have been perfect. When I go back for my follow up I am going to request another PA. She made me feel horrible.

Great experience. Came back for thorough examination. I was not seen exactly at the time of the appointment, but the wait was very little. Both the nurse practitioner and doctor Shum were very thorough. Highly recommended.

Very disappointing I waited more than 2 1/2 hours just to see the doctor ?. All the front office kept saying that they were backed up and it is now 5:21 pm and I’m still waiting to see the doctor and my appointment time is 3 o’clock. ?

The actual visit with the doctor was really nice. She has great bedside manner and is very sweet, explains things in a way that’s easy to understand. But the wait time is very very long. First time I waited well over an hour, asked for an update, it was suggested I return later on in the week. Even then I waited a long time as well.
