Forlenza is a native Staten Islander who has spent much of his professional life caring for his neighbors and friends on Staten Island as a Cancer and Palliative Care Specialist. He is a Physician of great skill and compassion, a devoted husband to Lucille and the proud father of Thomas Joseph, Jr. (TJ) and Rebecca Suzanne. A gifted teacher and author in his chosen profession, a musical artist in his own right, a linguist with abilities in numerous languages, and a devout Catholic—Dr. Tom Forlenza is the true “Renaissance Man,” who strives for excellence in all that he does. Dr. Forlenza began his secondary education at Xavier High School in Manhattan, graduating with honors in 1969. Dr. Forlenza then headed for Boston College. The Jesuits at B.C. awarded him a Bachelor of Arts, Summa cum laude, in 1973. He was a Scholar of the College in Psychology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Forlenza remained in Massachusetts for his formal medical education, graduating with his M.D. from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1977. Dr. Forlenza began his postgraduate training back on Staten Island as an Intern at St. Vincent’s Medical Center of Richmond. In 1978, he became a Medical Resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky at Lexington. In 1980, Dr. Forlenza headed back home for a Clinical Fellowship in Hematology at the New York University School of Medicine. He also did a Fellowship in Blood Banking, in the Division of Pathology at New York University while doing a Research Fellowship in the Division of Hematology. In 1982, after completing his work at New York University, Dr. Forlenza accepted a Clinical Fellowship in the Division of Oncology at Kings County Medical Center. After completing his Fellowship training, he became the Associate Director of Oncology at the Woodhull Medical Center, Brooklyn, a position he held until 1988.
