About Dr. Shakira Sheetal Shanker

She completed her medical internship at Montefiore Medical Center and subsequently pursued her residency in Neurology at North Shore University Hospital- Zucker School of Medicine affiliated with Hofstra University, where she served as chief neurology resident. During her training she was awarded for her excellent teaching of medical students and her peers. In addition, during her training she was invited to teach neurosciences at the prestigious Tel Aviv University- Sackler School of Medicine in Israel. Dr. Shanker completed her fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology where she was trained extensively in neurophysiology, electronics, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, single fiber EMG, motor unit analysis and disorders of the neuromuscular junction. During her training she was also educated and trained in muscular dystrophies, genetics, and myopathies.

The office was very clean and the staff was so welcoming and kind. Dr. Shakira Shanker was very attentive to my issues and was not rushing me out of the office at all. She answered any and all questions I had and was so sweet. I have severe anxiety and her aura calmed me instantly.

I have visited this office three times in total. Each one has had short wait times and the physician was extremely helpful. Staff was also pleasant. However, every time I have left the office, my prescriptions were never sent to the pharmacy. The phone number does not work for the office as they are updating it, and speaking with someone is impossible. I have had 2-3 week delays in receiving medication. They offer online forms to fill out, but often they go unanswered. I had to visit in person to ask for my medication filled multiple times, so unfortunately I cannot recommend this office.
From first contact to the appointment my experience was amazing! All staff are friendly and helpful, Dr Shanker is compassionate, caring and was thorough and made sure to explain everything that we discussed. I highly recommend this practice.

Taken into exam room right on time. Personable thorough medical tech, Lukas, did a complete and detailed history. Dr. Shanker was literally waiting behind the door to see me as soon as he was done. She listened patiently while I tried to describe my symptoms and relevant history. She gave me feedback as we went through my concerns and described possible diagnosis. She put me at ease and I feel we are on the same page. She gave me a script for a local MRI and had me schedule an EEG in her office before leaving. Staff was very accommodating with the date and time. She will be there for the tests. I feel relieved because I feel I am in good hands and look forward to an ultimate resolution of my issues.

My first two visits to the office were fine. But I did feel like there was a bait and switch on the treatment once they convinced me to go for testing. When I returned for the results, I waited over an hour and did not see the doctor. After a closer look at the establishment, it appears that they care mainly about their bottom line. The office has advertisements for different services to upsell you while you're waiting, from CBD to Vitamin shots. I had an appointment at 2 pm; I arrived at 2 pm sharp. I was seen by an intake person at 2:15 and waited in a room until 3:02 pm. To wait over an hour is just unacceptable when you have an appointment. At this point, I would like my results sent to me. I no longer want to deal with an establishment that cannot manage its office correctly. We are all busy and must have respect for each others time. I hope they can get it together one day, and no one else is subjected to that type of treatment.
Asked dr if I can get migraine injection treatment today. She said not a problem. Girl at front desk booked me for 1.5 hour later. I waited in my car with my dad. Came in 10 minutes early. Was bumped. Overbooked. Left upset. Wasted my time. Still have migraine. If you didn’t have time for me. Why did you have me sit around and wait for no reason. Happened before. Giving office 2nd chance. Not recommended for treatments for migraines and same day relief injections. Dr are great rehabilitation is horrible and rude. Plays favorites.Not the first time this has happened.

After many many months of knowing that somethings wrong with me and not getting answers, it was nice to feel Dr. Shanker’s empathy as well as her openness to my concerns. I didn’t like how the waiting room has a display case of CBD. I’m all for CBD but I feel uncomfortable that the office has a vested interest in selling products. I also received a marketing email from them about a Vitamin C supplement. NP do not use pulse oximeters yet the waiting room is moderately lavish. Pretty sure the doctor didn’t read my chart. Also don’t like how they want to keep your credit card information on file.
I have an appointment to go back however I feel like I was rushed in the appointment and I was not really heard. I only talk to the doctor for maybe 5 minutes tops. I was not able to even talk to her about all of my symptoms and she seems like she was busy.

Dr. Shakira has a very sweet demeanor and more importantly is extremely knowledgeable.. she made me feel comfortable between the two of these. I went for headaches I was having that were unusual and she had me answer a few questions, after coming to the conclusion that it was probably allergies causing them, she also referred me for a few tests just to be cautious and make sure that’s all it was. Which again, made me feel like I was in good hands.. I highly recommend anybody looking for a neurologist to come see her. They will not be disappointed. (A lot of paperwork, but not a long wait time at all, in fact I finished the paperwork as we were speaking in the office). And the staff, I have never dealt with a rude or nasty staff member, be it, over the phone, or in person. They are all very nice and understanding... I couldn’t have been happier I chose to go to this office..
