Understanding referral orders

Learn about referral order requirements for appointments booked on Zocdoc

Updated over a year ago

Patients are required to upload a referral order when booking with an imaging facility on Zocdoc. Referral orders ensure that practices receive the essential information upfront so they can verify the type of care or medical service the patient needs.

Which Zocdoc appointments require referral orders?

An image of the referral order is required when patients book any of the following services with an imaging facility:

  • X-ray

  • Ultrasound

  • Mammogram

  • CT

  • MRI

There is one exception. Patients who are at least 40 years old and are only booking a baseline or screening mammogram (with no additional imaging) are not required to upload a referral order. Instead, they must provide the name, phone number, and practice name for a referring physician who will receive their results.

For these appointments, the visit reason will be Baseline mammogram or Screening mammogram, and in the appointment card, you’ll see contact information for a referring physician instead of a referral order.

Where can I find a patient’s referral order?

Go to Inbox to access the patient’s appointment card. Then go to the Referral section. You’ll see the referral order and can download it from there.

If a patient falls into the special category for screening mammograms, you’ll see the referring physician’s name, phone number, and practice name in the Booking details tab of the appointment card.

Referral order FAQs

I only see the first page of the referral order. Where are the other pages?

Currently, patients are only required to upload one page of their referral order. If you need more information, please reach out to the patient directly.

Do you require patients to upload prior authorization before booking?

No, but patients are required to share whether they have received prior authorization when booking an MRI or CT scan. This way you’ll have the information you need to connect with the patient, discuss any requirements, and increase the chances that they arrive fully prepared.

If a patient hasn't received prior authorization, they’ll see a message with instructions to initiate the process, but can still book. You’ll see whether a patient has received prior authorization in the appointment card. Just go to the Appointment details tab and look at the Patient note.

  • Tip: If the patient hasn’t received prior authorization, get in touch with them asap to make sure there is enough time before their appointment to coordinate prior authorization for their scheduled type of imaging.
