How we hire

This guide will help you navigate our hiring process and show us what makes you, you.

What to Expect

Discover the key steps and what you’ll encounter during our hiring process, from application to onboarding, to ensure you’re fully prepared for each stage.

Virtual or In-Person

Your interview may be virtual or in-person at our New York office (568 Broadway). We’ll ensure a smooth experience either way.

In-person: Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and a quick tour.

Virtual: We use GMEET—join 5 minutes early to check your audio and video.

Our Interview Style

We use competency-based interviews to identify your strengths in areas like leadership, communication, and technical skills. The specific competencies we assess vary by role. Your recruiter can provide more details.

Depending on the role, you may be asked to complete a project, assignment, or role-play to demonstrate your skills. This helps us evaluate your expertise and gives you a feel for the type of work you may be doing.

Who You’ll Meet

As part of your interview process, you can expect to meet with your potential manager, as well as other individuals who collaborate closely with this role. Depending on the position, you may also meet members of other teams or executives. Your recruiter will ensure you have a clear understanding of who you’ll be speaking with at each step and will update you with any changes to the schedule.

How to Prepare

Be Ready to Talk About Your Skills

At Zocdoc, we use behavioral, competency-based interviews to understand your strengths. You’ll reflect on past experiences to show how you approach future situations. If you have a technical or role-play round, you’ll want to take some time to review the prompts and prepare.

How to Structure Your Responses

We recommend using the STAR or CAR method. These frameworks can help you provide clear, concise, and detailed examples of your past experiences.
Using STAR/CAR helps you articulate your experiences effectively and ensures you provide thorough answers to our interview questions. Remember to focus on your specific role and actions within each situation.

Prepare Questions

Interviews are a two-way street. We encourage you to ask questions about the role, our culture, and the people you’ll meet. Learning a bit about your interviewers can help you ask more tailored, thoughtful questions.

Dress Comfortably

At Zocdoc, we don’t have a dress code; we trust our team members to make appropriate choices, and this extends to prospective Zocdoc’rs as well! Generally we recommend business casual, but you should wear whatever allows your confidence and personality to shine

Next Steps

We move quickly at Zocdoc—and that includes our interview process. If you have questions about timelines or your own deadlines, just let us know. We aim to share updates within 3–5 business days of your final interview and will also send a survey to hear your feedback.
We hope this guide helps you feel prepared and confident for your interview. We look forward to meeting you and learning more about your skills and experience.

Interview Types

Behavioral Interviewing:

Our interviews at Zocdoc are primarily behavioral-based. This means we focus on understanding how you’ve acted in specific situations in the past. We believe that your past behavior is a strong indicator of how you’ll perform in the future. During these interviews, you’ll be asked to share examples from your previous experiences that demonstrate the skills and competencies relevant to the role. Be prepared to discuss specific situations, the actions you took, and the results of those actions. This approach helps us gain a clear understanding of your capabilities and how you might approach challenges and opportunities at Zocdoc.

Role Plays

For certain roles, particularly within sales and customer service, you may participate in a role-play exercise. This involves simulating real-life scenarios related to the job. It allows you to demonstrate your skills, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities in a controlled environment. We use role-plays to get a better understanding of how you might handle specific situations and interact with others in the role. It’s also very normal to receive feedback during or after a role-play. This helps us assess your self awareness, coachability and ability to incorporate suggestions, which is an important aspect of many roles at Zocdoc.

Technical Interviews

If you’re applying for a role on our Technology or Analytics teams, you’ll have a technical interview. This may include tasks or exercises that reflect the core skills of the job. We’re looking at more than just technical know-how—we also pay attention to how you communicate, problem-solve, collaborate, and respond to feedback. It’s a chance for us to see how you’d approach real challenges and contribute to the team.

Case Studies / Working Sessions

For some roles, you may be asked to complete a case study or participate in a working session. You’ll be given a prompt, project, or scenario—sometimes in advance, sometimes during the interview—often based on real business challenges. These exercises help us understand how you solve problems, make decisions, and apply both technical and interpersonal skills in context.
