More about Dr. Fabien Bitan, MD

Dr. Fabien D. Bitan is an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon in private practice in Manhattan. He is the director of Spine Surgery services at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Bitan was trained in Paris, France where he gained his Medical Degree and his Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery. His orthopedic training in the 80s was from the outset oriented towards spinal surgery. One of the most important periods of his training years was the twelve months spent at the "Institut Calot" in Berk-sur-mer in northern France. The "Institut Calot" is one of the most prominent centers for the treatment of spinal deformities (SCOLIOSIS AND KYPHOSIS) in Europe. Dr. Cotrel has been the chief surgeon of this institution where he designed the "Cotrel-Dubousset Instrumentation" in the mid 19080s. Dr. Bitan had the privilege of training during these years and acquired extensive experience in the use of this revolutionary technique well before it became wide-spread in the orthopedic world. (Today, this technique is recognized throughout the world as one of the most influential breakthroughs in spinal surgery of the last decades). Enriched by a personal experience of more than a thousand surgical cases, Dr. Bitan is recognized as one of the experts in spinal instrumentation, especially for SCOLIOSIS AND KYPHOSIS. Since his residency Dr. Bitan has also gained much experience with Artificial Disc Replacement technology (Charite Disc). Originally, this procedure was used only in France at only one institution.

He was thoughtful, seemed genuinely concerned, and had a good bedside manner (although a little french laissez-faire).
Convinced me I did not need surgery..when greedy no fault surgeons had convinced me otherwise. Thank you for being human!
Sincerely cares about his patients. He was very thorough and spent as much time as necessary with me. He's great!

I have seen any number of doctors for a variety of ailments over the years. My interactions with Dr. Bitan represents the single worst experience I've ever had with a medical professional. He was completely inaccessible when I needed to speak with him, was over two hours late on each of the two occasions I saw him, and most importantly, paid almost no attention to me when I was under his care. He never once followed-up with me after I saw him to see how I was doing, despite the fact that he knew I was having problems. I would not recommend Dr. Bitan to my worst enemy.
My visit here did not go well. I was injured in a car accident and they did not realize the the driver's insurance company was supposed to pay for my MRI. Someone at the doctor's office called the driver's insurance adjuster and since she was not at her desk I could not get my MRI done. They asked if I wanted to use my own insurance coverage and I said no. What a complete waste of my time!

Dr Bitan is the best when it comes to knowledge and skill in treating the spine. I would highly recommend him. He is funny too!

This was just an initial consultation for surgery, so I can't give an extensive review but I like Dr. Bitan. He seems to be very experienced. I really appreciated his intuitive sensibilities when it came up to assessing my case. Too many prior doctors have paid more attention to my MRI's than my symptoms.
Extremely professional. Highly recommended.

The long wait was because I didn't get there early enough to fill out paperwork for a new patient, and I had to get xrays, but after I got my x-rays, I was seen right away! Dr. Bitan was very professional, nice and personable, and is an expert in his field (spine orthopedics and Scoliosis-which I had when I was a kid), which is exactly what I needed. I went for a follow-up to a car accident, but if I had more back problems, and if he takes my regular insurance, I will definitely go back to him.

Dr. Bitan, really took the time explaining the issues with my spine with me. I brought a book with about 20+ questions for him, and he wasn't insulted, he went and got a chair and answered everyone of them- and he did it in as long as it took for me to be comfortable. I still haven't decided what I'm doing with my spine- but I am confident I would be in good hands with Dr. Bitan.
Dr. Bitan is a wonderful doctor with an excellent bedside manner. He performed a spine surgery that gave me back my life and I am eternally grateful to him. :)

Dr. Bitan is a credit to his field. If you have back problems, he is the guy to go to, especially if you have Scoliosis, because he's an expert on that condition. He's also very nice and really cares about his patients. Furthermore, he doesn't just prescribe medicine/drugs and call it a day. For example, he prescribed physical therapy, acupuncture and even swimming to help with my back condition. I really appreciated that. I'm glad he's my orthopedist.
very professional .
