Who is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a certified health professional who specializes in caring for the neuromusculoskeletal system, which includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and bones. Chiropractors emphasize preventative care to avoid or address problems in their early stages. They use manual techniques or specialized instruments to correct musculoskeletal conditions, adjust joint alignment, and maintain overall bodily balance. This approach is joint manipulation or spinal manipulation.

Chiropractic treatment aims to restore normal muscle balance and joint function, reduce stress on the immune system, and decrease the occurrence of chronic diseases. Chiropractic care focuses on the entire human body, including the ability to move, think, and function optimally. Depending on the disorder, chiropractors may suggest regular exercise, proper nutrition, massage, hot/cold therapy, and guidance on movements and posture. They can help manage chronic pain and improve overall quality of life.

What kind of education and training do chiropractors receive?

While chiropractors don't hold an MD degree, they are doctors of chiropractic care. Although they are not medical doctors, they are still considered doctors. Chiropractors study many of the same subjects as medical doctors, including physiology, orthopedics, anatomy, microbiology, and radiology. They also accumulate comparable patient experience, classroom hours, and lab time as medical students.

In the nation, earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree typically involves a four-year program following three years of undergraduate study. All states require chiropractors to earn this degree, clear the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exam, and obtain a state license. Doctoral programs cover life sciences like anatomy and physiology and provide supervised training in assessments, spinal adjustment techniques, and business practices.

Enrolling in a Doctor of Chiropractic program requires at least three years of undergraduate education. The Council on Chiropractic Education must accredit the program. This degree includes anatomy, physiology, and other basic sciences coursework and supervised clinical experience to develop hands-on skills.

Chiropractors may pursue postgraduate education in specialized areas such as pediatrics or orthopedics. Some states mandate a background check and exams on state-specific chiropractic laws. All states require continuing education in order to maintain a license.

Difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath

Chiropractors and osteopaths both focus on improving body function and structure by manipulating bones, muscles, and connective tissue. Osteopaths typically complete a 4-year BSc degree (BOst).

Both chiropractors and osteopaths use the "high-velocity thrust" technique, with chiropractors using their hands and osteopaths often using the patient's arms and legs. Chiropractors might use X-rays for diagnosis, whereas osteopaths use them to rule out other issues. Chiropractic treatment usually involves six sessions, while osteopathic treatment is on an "as needed" basis.

Common conditions treated by chiropractors

Chiropractic treatment effectively manages a range of disorders, injuries, and misalignments in the spinal area, which can significantly impact overall well-being and the nervous system. Common conditions treated by chiropractors include:

Arthritis: Chiropractors can treat and manage symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disorder) and osteoarthritis (a degenerative condition often associated with hormonal imbalances, aging, and vitamin deficiencies). They manipulate the joints to improve their range of motion and restore physical mobility.

Neck pain: The neck, consisting of seven small cervical vertebrae, is a crucial and delicate body part. Neck pain may arise due to misalignments in these vertebrae. Chiropractors perform diagnostic tests to identify problematic vertebrae and then administer appropriate chiropractic treatment to alleviate discomfort and improve neck mobility.

Back problems: Chiropractors treat a range of back issues, including posture-related problems, general discomfort, localized joint pain, and more complex chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as fibromyalgia.

Headache: Chiropractic treatment can help address tension headaches and migraines. These headaches and migraines have trigger points in the neck muscles, including the sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, suboccipital, and splenius muscles. Chiropractors identify the relevant trigger points and provide appropriate treatment to alleviate symptoms.

Musculoskeletal conditions: Chiropractic treatment can help correct various musculoskeletal disorders, such as:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Ligament injuries and tendinitis
  • Epicondylitis
  • Herniated discs
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shin splints
  • Stroke
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic discomfort
  • Scoliosis
  • Muscle, ligament, or joint pulls and tears
  • Ruptured tendons or discs
  • Frozen joints and dislocations

Importance of female chiropractors in healthcare

Female chiropractors are an essential part of the healthcare system. They provide vital chiropractic services to patients of all ages with various health conditions. You can see a female chiropractor near you for various reasons, including:

  • Patient-centered care: Female chiropractors often excel in patient-centered care, emphasizing a holistic approach to treatment. They take the time to listen to their patients, understand their unique needs, and provide compassionate and personalized care.
  • Understanding a woman's unique needs: Female chiropractors are trained to address women's unique needs and use this drug-free, noninvasive therapy to provide significant relief. Whether during pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or any other stage of life, women can benefit from chiropractic care provided by female chiropractors. Due to the presence of female chiropractors, an increasing number of women are receiving the proper care they need, improving their overall health.

Many women may require regular chiropractic care to relieve their period cramps and other PMS symptoms. The female reproductive system and the spine are closely linked. Chiropractic care helps with proper spinal alignment, enhances nerve functions, and thus improves women's fertility. Therefore, women with infertility issues may also benefit from chiropractic care.

Is seeing a chiropractor safe and helpful during pregnancy?

Chiropractic care is known for alleviating spinal nerve stress and enhancing overall health. While complications from this therapy are rare, it is important to approach it with caution, especially during pregnancy.

Generally, chiropractic care is considered safe for pregnant women; however, specific circumstances may warrant caution. Women with conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, vaginal bleeding, placenta previa, placental abruption, or moderate to severe toxemia should avoid chiropractic treatment. It is essential for those considering chiropractic care during pregnancy to first obtain approval from a qualified healthcare provider. Additionally, ensuring that the chiropractor has experience in treating pregnant patients or requesting a referral from a doctor is advisable.

Chiropractors utilize specialized adjusting tables and safe techniques to accommodate the physical changes women undergo during pregnancy, ensuring that the abdomen is not subjected to unnecessary pressure. They may also recommend effective stretches to alleviate discomfort and tension. As pregnancy progresses, hormonal and physical changes can impact posture and lead to spinal or joint misalignment due to the body’s adaptations to the growing baby. For example, increased weight from the baby can create curvature in the back, while shifts in the pelvic region prepare the body for labor, affecting balance and posture.

Regular visits to a qualified chiropractor can restore balance and alignment within the pelvis and spine, benefiting both the mother and the developing baby. Incorporating chiropractic care into prenatal health routines can contribute positively to the well-being of both mother and child, potentially supporting a healthy pregnancy, managing nausea, reducing labor duration, alleviating pain in the joints, back, and neck, and decreasing the likelihood of requiring a cesarean delivery.
