About You - Psychiatric Services
Introducing Paula Gravitt: The Brain Whisperer (and Chief Cheerleader!)
Hello! I'm Paula Gravitt, and I'm a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
I know what you might be thinking: 'Great, another mental health professional.' But stick with me—I'm not your average prescription-pusher. Think of me as a mental health detective with a side of stand-up comedy (okay, maybe just some really good dad jokes).
My passion for this field isn't just professional; it's personal. I have both lived and professional experience that has given me a deep understanding of what families go through. Before opening my practice, I gained invaluable experience working the front lines, from the inpatient unit at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children in Richmond to working with families at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Chesapeake. After a stint in private practice, I decided to build a space where I could provide the most thorough and collaborative care possible.
My Specialties: More Than Just the ABCs
I help kids, teens, and families navigate a wide range of complex challenges. My areas of focus include:
Neurodevelopmental Needs: Autism and ADHD
Behavioral Health: Challenging Behaviors, OCD, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviors
Emotional Wellness: Anxiety and Depression
Family & Identity: Parenting struggles, Parent-Child Communication, and LGBTQ+ mental health.
My Approach: The Whole Picture (Yes, I Look Under the Rug!)
My philosophy is integrative and extremely thorough. Think of our first appointment as a deep-dive investigation (yes, they are a little longer for a reason—I promise it's worth it!). I'm not just looking at symptoms; I'm examining:
The Patient: Their mental health, medical history, and daily environment.
The System: Family dynamics, friendships, and the various places they spend their time.
I believe in medication when necessary, not as a first resort. When we do choose a medication, I want you to feel empowered and informed. I talk through my entire thought process and, most importantly, I'm already thinking about deprescribing down the road.
Let's Work Together
In my practice, collaboration is key. It's not just me telling you what to do. It’s a team effort between me, the patient, and their parent/caregivers. Medications are only one tool; therapy is essential. I also make it a point to coordinate care with all of a patient's other providers to ensure we're all on the same page.
If you're looking for a compassionate, comprehensive, and perhaps slightly goofy PMHNP who is dedicated to a truly holistic approach, let's connect!
