Dr. Bruce Irwin opened the first American Family Care clinic in 1982, making it the first urgent care, family care, and primary care practice in Birmingham, Alabama. From the outset, Dr. Irwin held to the philosophy of “putting the patient first,” an attitude that quickly made AFC one of the most successful urgent care clinics in the area. More than 40 years later, the AFC brand and philosophy have spread to more than 350 facilities across 30 states.

Pioneers in the Urgent Care Practice
All AFC clinics are designed, equipped, and staffed to provide accessible primary care, urgent care and occupational medicine. We are considered pioneers in non-emergency room urgent care, with a majority of our patients coming in, receiving care, and returning home in one hour’s time on average.

I had an appointment and arrived 15 minutes early, even shared my confirmation number. The person at the window told me they were canceling my appointment because they still had some people to see who were already in the back and the doctor needed time for paperwork so they weren’t taking more people. That was it. Not a referral, not an apology, nothing about the inconvenience. Luckily I found some where else to go NOT affiliated with Zocdoc docs or AFC and received the care I needed.

Overall they were able to give me a prescription for my illness. The process of being able to be let back was very aggravating and not pleasant. I got there 15 minutes before my appointment for them to basically tell me that they don't honor appointment times made on Zocdoc. They then basically told me to come back 3.5 hours after my originally timed appointment. Originally the people at the front desk came off as a little rude but lightened up after this "confusion" was taken care of. Overall I would give them a 3/5 since they were able to take care of me and what I originally went there for but it just was a bit of a longer day than expected.

The front desk staff and the nurse were very helpful and pleasant. The doctor however had horrible bedside manner. He told me “most women think very headache is a migraine.” Very unprofessional. Have you met most women, was this published in a peer reviewed journal. These comments were dismissive diminishing what I was experiencing. I will never return to AFC.

I arrived at a good time; wast’t so busy. Did some paperwork and 10Min later inside, got what I needed. After I came out it started getting full. I went on a sunday 10:30am

Registered on so doc. Then had register with office. Office then “confirmed” my appointment for a totally different time. Saw me at my zoc doc time but email from them was for 3hrs later. Staff was nice, but since I was COVID positive saw only a nurse. Dr did consult by zoom on a device they provided
