I’ve been struggling with OCD for 28 years and I’ve been in treatment for 17 years. It was not until I began seeing Alyssa a year and a half ago that I truly began feeling I was on the right path. When I started working with her, I was mentally exhausted and not excited about life. I felt like I was struggling to even function daily; life satisfaction and fulfillment did not seem feasible. However, this began to change. Alyssa is a wonderful provider. She takes initiative in treatment, challenging you and encouraging you to face the fears/worries that are holding you back. She is tough in an excellent way; she meets you where you are and helps you make the steps that work for you at the moment. She remains encouraging and motivating, and is completely understanding that you are human and that hesitation and setbacks occur. She realizes that treatment is difficult and knows how to help you lift yourself up when you're having an especially rough period. Alyssa is an extremely genuine, personable and down-to-earth provider, and it is very apparent that she truly cares about your wellbeing and greater quality of life. It is obvious that she does what she does because she sincerely wants to help people live wholeheartedly. She is straightforward and honest, and will help you learn how you can live in healthier ways, but she does this all in a welcoming manner. She doesn’t diminish how you feel or how difficult the mental health journey can be, but she maintains a sense of motivation and creativity to help you continue forward at a pace that works for you. Alyssa roots for you in your journey toward the life you want and makes an enormous effort to help you get there. She gives you the tools to continue therapy work outside of appointment time, as well as coping skills for when this therapy work brings forth difficult emotions. She is proactive and creative in treatment, and teaches you to regain the driver's seat in your life along the way. Alyssa reminds you of your worth as a human and of your unique strengths and qualities, especially when your mind bombards you with thoughts that try to convince you otherwise or when difficult emotions trick you into thinking you’re doing something wrong…in fact, she reminds you that those difficult emotions mean you’re facing your fears. She helps you realize that you’re more capable than your mind might tell you, and that you have more insight, strength and resilience than you may give yourself credit for. She encourages you to engage in productive exposures/exercises and also takes the time to help you process your progress, emotions and life situation…especially when significant life events occur. I have gained a much greater understanding of my own OCD, and of myself overall. I am more cognizant of what I’m capable of and I’ve learned to be motivated and inspired, even through setbacks, instead of blaming myself. She has shown me that OCD is not who I am; it is something I deal with. She has led me to realize that I am capable of living a fulfilling life, and doing what I want to do, even with my diagnosis. I have gone from feeling defeated and almost out of hope to feeling energized and excited about what I will accomplish in the future. Developing a healthier relationship with my diagnosis has even given me room to make progress in other areas of my life, and has taught me to live as my more genuine self.
